Dog attack -- 4" tear and puncture wound

Here are the pictures: Pre-stitches, filled up with neosporin: (The puncture is near her tail, and looks deceptively minor...if I hadn't seen it fresh and open, I might have missed it..) More like a 2.5" tear, after all...funny how the mind exaggerates these things. Stitched wound: And she...

Dog attack -- 4" tear and puncture wound

My dog got a hold of one of my chickens last night. (It was all my fault, too...I let the dogs out without checking to see if my husband had let the chickens out first...) He ripped out most of the feathers on her back and bit her back, resulting in about a 4 inch tear and a single puncture...

I need help fast (not an emergency)

You might want to build one of these hoop houses -- they are very simple to construct, pretty cheap, and good against predators: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=172799&p=1 If you run wire underneath the bottom as well, then you have total predator protection...

    Beak-pecking chick

Hi all, I have nine chicks of mixed varieties, ranging in age from 2 days to about 1.5 weeks old. Everyone has been pretty calm, except the Ancona chick (probably a ~4-day-old). She pecks beaks. Everyone's beaks. Constantly. She just runs from chick to chick, pecking at their nostrils...

Caring for weak chick, post-pasting up

We are having a big snowstorm in Colorado at the moment. Last night, our power went out. I rushed to the brooder, switched the chicks to a much smaller box, and sat with it on my lap in front of the fireplace, huddled under a blanket. I got to be Mother Hen brooding her chicks! For two...

Caring for weak chick, post-pasting up

I'm gave her a little tray with the yogurt paste now...hopefully she will take a few bites. I'll pick up some of the vitamins tomorrow. Thank you for the stuffed animal suggestion -- I put in a chick-sized stuffed bumblebee. She ignored it until I jiggled it up and down, then she walked over...

    Don't know what to do?

If she's still a chick, perhaps it's just her umbilical cord ? If so, you shouldn't pick at it !

Caring for weak chick, post-pasting up

Sometimes she will drink a bit after I dip her beak. But for the last day, she's just shakes her beak after I dip it, cheeping loudly all the while...I think she's getting a little down, though.

Caring for weak chick, post-pasting up

Hi everyone, I'm new to keeping chickens, so please bear with me! One of the six chicks I got from the feed store on Sunday had a very pasted-up vent. The droppings were rock hard, and there was a rather large pile -- which makes me think the chick had had this problem for 2 days or more...
