Seedling heat pad and temp reading for MHP cave?

Just wanted to update. The littles are almost two weeks old and they’ve done well with the seedling mat. The last 4-5 nights I’ve found a couple sleeping half under and a couple sleeping on top. So today I moved them outside. Inside the tote is nice and dry, I added a second mat on the...

Seedling heat pad and temp reading for MHP cave?

This is the one that I have. I do have another one without a thermostat that doesn’t seem to get as warm. I plan to move them outside to start integrating in a few weeks. I may have to add the second mat if the night time temps are too cold.

Seedling heat pad and temp reading for MHP cave?

I have the thermostat set to 95. It did warm up to that yesterday afternoon when the sun was out. Overnight the garage cooled back down a little and their cave was 90f this morning. It seems to keep it about 15 degrees warmer than the room. They seem to love it. I dipped their beaks in the...

Seedling heat pad and temp reading for MHP cave?

I'm picking up chicks this morning and am using a seedling mat for a MHP. In the cave the temp is reading about 86 degrees. They'll be in the garage which is about 75 this time of year. Big windows so they get natural light. I'll move them out to the coop to introduce them to the big girls...

    Oral thrush vs canker?

I'm not aware of any labs here that accept samples unless they're sent from a vet. Other than regular fecals, and those would be done in house at the vet clinic. Ugh, I'll just keep calling and bugging this vet. Seems silly that something that should realistically be easy to treat may end up...

    Oral thrush vs canker?

No, like I said, not very helpful. I use their practice for my other animals, another vet at the practice did crop surgery for me last year. First time seeing this particular vet, unfortunately he's the semi-retired owner and the staff love him and think he's great with chickens  I...

    Oral thrush vs canker?

I have a 4yo Speckled Sussex hen who has had awful breath for a few weeks now. Crop functioning normally. Still has an appetite, but is uncomfortable eating and is producing a lot of saliva. Inside her mouth she has white/creamy coloured lesions. I've tried treating with...

Is it ok if my chicken crop is empty?

TSC in Ontario is not the same as TSC in the US. TSC in Ontario is also changing to the name Peavey Mart. Rolling acres feed is fine. Ask around, there's likely a feed store closer than you think. Most feed stores that stock things for horses, cattle, and other livestock, will also have...

Are my hens preening me, or just curious?

My speckled sussex likes to stare at her reflection and the glare from my glasses. Whenever I come in to clean the coop she hops up onto the roost and stares, following me to get a good look. Eventually she gets bored since I don't let her get too close to my eyeballs lol. Then she moves on...

What’s the obsession over egg shell color?

Because they're pretty. Variety is the spice of life. I've got one cream legbar who lays blue eggs, she's 2.5 yrs old. I unfortunately just had to cull my easter egger (green eggs) last week. I've also got a white leghorn (white eggs), a red sexlink (darker brown eggs), a barred rock (light...

Is it ok if my chicken crop is empty?

Where in Canada are you? I'm in Ontario, used to live in Alberta. I might be able to help you source some proper feed. How many chickens do you have?

Official BYC Poll: Where Do You Buy Your Feed From & Why?

I buy the chicken feed and horse feed from the local feed store. I'm far pickier about the horse feed than the chicken feed. The dog has allergies so I order hers online.

Post-op care after crop surgery. Hen not gaining weight.

Final update. Miss Echo had decided that the only foods worthy of excitement were sprouts and watermelon...hard to gain weight on that diet. We had a couple mild days so I put her out in the small quarantine coop with a friend, still no interest in eating actual food. It was a difficult...

Not eating, lethargic and it’s cold!

And just a PSA. I went to weigh one of my hens this morning and nearly panicked when it said she had dropped 8oz. Sneaky girl had her toenail resting on the stand. She had in fact gained 2 oz.

Not eating, lethargic and it’s cold!

If you have a good digital scale that can be calibrated you can do like azygous suggested. The ones with the needle aren't very accurate. Any cheap kitchen scale will work.

Not eating, lethargic and it’s cold!

Do you have a scale to weigh her? I've got a hen who is just over three weeks post impacted crop surgery. She hasn't been all that interested in food so I've been making sure to weigh her almost every day. Even though she's acting normal now she's still underweight and has a finicky appetite...

Post-op care after crop surgery. Hen not gaining weight.

Oh believe me, I've tried nearly every food that's edible to chickens. She's being very picky. No interest in eggs. Casually picks at wet/canned cat food. She goes through spurts with the meal worms, one days she'll eat as many as she can, the next day she only wants a few. Yesterday and...

Post-op care after crop surgery. Hen not gaining weight.

Update So with the cold weather that we were having and her low weight I decided to go with the third option and just keep her in the garage 24/7. I noticed the tiniest scab at the bottom of the incision Thursday morning, by Friday night it had grown a little. She wasn't eating much on her...

I’ve been exposed to Covid-19, will it spread to my backyard free-range flock?

I don't believe that any transmission from humans to poultry has been observed. Some research was done early on in the pandemic where poultry and swine were purposely inoculated nasally with SARS-Cov-2, none became infected...

Post-op care after crop surgery. Hen not gaining weight.

She had a big poop this morning so it appears that her digestive system isn’t the problem. There was a tiny bit left in the crop, which again went away with massage. She’s definitely tired, but isn’t acting “sick”. I put her back out with the flock and no one seemed bothered by her. When I...
