Hello -
We have a flock of 1 male (Pekin) and 4 female (Pekin and Swedish) ducks, 2-3 years old. One of our Swedish girls, Unicorn - my daughter named them - has always been quite small, so much that we'd have to keep her separated from our drake during mating season.
Over the summer we lost...
She's so cute! I hope she grows at least a little more. Worst case scenario the big girls are willing to hang with her so if we have to separate her from the drake next mating season we can manage that. She's much faster than he is right now anyway 😊
Just have to share a photo of my little sweetie... she's been having some supervised free range time with the big kids. Thank heavens our drake has decided mating season is over so he hasn't tried to mate with anyone, much less with her. It might be wishful thinking but she seems a little bigger...
Here's another question ... do you think I'd need to worry about her flying away? None of my others can fly very far. Her wings don't have mature feathers yet so maybe not an issue, but I'd hate to lose her!
The call ducks are so sweet! Whenever my giant lump of a Pekin passes (he's only 2 so hopefully it will be a bit) I can see myself transitioning totally to Calls.
I don't think so -- she was in a smaller pen with two others that were the same size (I was hoping to bring home two but the other seemed to be a boy so left her brother behind). She also feels pretty squishy in the chest when you pick her up, not thin 😊
The calls were in a separate enclosure...
I'm curious what others think about this little hen that I picked up on Craigslist yesterday. She is supposed to be a Buff/Rouen cross, hatched "in June".
She's so small! I'd guess 1-2 lbs, though I haven't weighed her. She is mostly feathered but has a little fluff on her back. When we have...
They seem ok, fingers crossed. I keep looking at them anxiously. I am very glad that so far it doesn't seem like they're all going to be culled, I don't think I could take it.
Thanks everyone. The state told me today their criteria is "3 dead birds in a week" to test. Hopefully we don't make it to that. I feel a little better but still hate when they die. It always makes me feel like I failed somehow.
Hi all, I am so sad and just needed to share. Over the last few days our sweet duck Sparkle began struggling to breathe. In retrospect it might have started a few days earlier but I thought the ducks were panting because it was so hot; then it cooled off and she was still panting and within 24...
They went for a swim in the deep water today (pond drained and refilled with fresh water) and stayed mostly dry. Thanks for your help! My ducks would probably be dead by now without BYC!
Thanks so much @Isaac 0 & @Miss Lydia, you're both so generous with your time & knowledge. They have their drinking water pans that they love to sit in and I've seen them preening, and I'm going to let them out in the yard with a small kiddie pool now (the pond is 100% empty).
