I have many a chicken killed by foxes:/ here is a picture of the guy I found in coop
With my headless chicken.
I thought the girl was safe in the coop, but the fox dug a hole and let himself in.
It’s a if they do it just because they can.
My favorite chickens are the Midnight Majestic Marans. Their black feathers have iridescent green and blue coloring, truly making them majestic. They are sweet girls and great layers. My Buffs and Sussex girls are also very sweet, but the Marans, are by far the best layers and the most easy...
I live inArizona where we spend most of our summers somewhere between 109-115, (ouch to disaster). I bought a Hessair portable evaporator cooler 8 years ago to keep their coop cool. They run around $150 and last about 5 years depending on how much you run them. My girls have plenty of shade...
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing. I keep trying to "improve" my chickens living quarters, but husband has decided that I am more of a shanty town builder than a home improvement person. Haha.
Great Question! My favorites are my Rhode Island Reds:) they are sweet girls and they are good layers. Also, they seem to tolerate our horrible summers here in Arizona.
Hi Lydia,
I purchased a swamp cooler for my girls. It's an indoor/outdoor Hessaire. It's amazing! I leave it on all day. Living in Arizona, where the summer temperatures average 110, it can be pretty hard on the chickens. Fortunately for me, I have a well and a large lot with mature trees and...
This morning I was outside, just at sunrise was starting and I heard, what sounded like to me, a crowing noise. I hurried to my coop to see who was making the sound, but as you probably already guessed the sound stopped and all the girls had ,"I-didn't-do-it-look" on their faces. I have never...
My girls have several perches at different heights in their coop/run. It’s a rather large coop open air with chicken wire walls so they have fresh air. Living in Arizona, the summers are often way over 100 and some nights the air is quite still. I wet the area down and have a fan running to help...
Great discussion! I have been having the same problem. I added two girls to my yard as my older girl just lost her best buddy a few weeks ago. Fortunately, I have a huge yard and an extra run/coop. During the day, the new girls chase my older girl to other parts of the yard . Eventually they...
I love my time with my girls! When I am stressed or just need to get away from the day, I go out to the field and dig up worms for them. They get so excited and chatty. Crazy? Yes, but fun:)
i added a misting system and ACV and electrolytes to their water. She seems to be perking up a little. The chicken guru at our local feed store, Tom, thought it was heat exhaustion, since she doesn’t have any discharge.
So again, thank you everyone! Sometimes this chicken thing is a scary. I...
