My dad is somewhat in the same boat with the eggs. He had a bad experience with some of his co-worker's eggs a long time ago. I guess the guy wasn't very good about collecting the eggs in a timely manner, and you never knew what would come out. So he won't eat any brown eggs, unless they come...- Newby81

Just to update. I ended up with 3 chicks out of my experiment. They are doing great, and mom is teaching them a lot. I have them running around. I will wait a little longer to reintroduce them. Mom is very protective, so she will help them.- Newby81

I use old square plastic buckets for nesting boxes. So when I separated her, I was able to put her on the ground level. I don't what happened to the poor chick. I just hope it is the only one.- Newby81

Sorry I can't help Raz. Well the chicks started hatching last night. I haven't been able to see too much yet. I had one dead one outside of the nesting box, so I am nervous. So I am starting into the home stretch with my broody hen. I set the eggs under her on June 5th. From my understanding they take about 21 days to hatch correct? What day so I start the count down. My kids are starting to get excited, so I was wondering when we need to keep a closer eye on them...- Newby81

My broody hen has been on the fertile eggs since Friday night. I have her separated and in a quiet place. I have not seen any evidence of her leaving the eggs, no poop in the bedding outside of the nesting box. I know she wont wander very much from the nest, but what should I look for to make...- Newby81

I need some suggestions. My year old Brown Leghorn has become broody. I don't have any roosters, so I am getting some fertilized eggs from a neighbor. I am just testing it out, I have never tried hatching eggs, let alone with a hen. I figured the kids would enjoy something to keep them...- Newby81

Yeah it is quiet. This morning while doing chores I heard one of my chicks from this spring practice a couple of crows. I was able to rehome the one I knew was a rooster, so now apparently I have a second. Here I thought that I was getting better at sexing them. Must be one of my brown leghorns...- Newby81

My son is 10, he loves all things snakes. Loves catching them. Luckily we don't have to worry too much about dangerous snakes. He had to learn to identify all of the snakes in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota for Science Olympiad this past year, so at least he now knows what he is attempting to...- Newby81
