Safe to eat eggs from a broody hen?

This thread is pretty old and I'm not a terribly active member. Not sure if it's relivable, but will give it a whirl. In April, I celebrated my first anniversary of having poultry. From the original flock, we kept 3 chicks, a duck and 4 geese over the winter. One of my 3 supposedly non broody...

    Helpful hints for building coops

I looked at the link. Holy Scramboli, that's a chicken coop! Since this was several years ago now, how are things going? I definitely agree with your rule of two's, except for the time part, for us, that was about a factor of 4, but we're not as young as we used to be. I might post a pic or 2...

How often do you change pool water?

Interesting. Is this a store-bought filter system? Or perhaps something you made that diverts the water and filters it? Maybe a potential article with pictures here...!

How often do you change pool water?

Reality, sigh. Sometimes it bites! It's hard to appreciate the work involved until you have those cute, fuzzy creatures. But ultimately, they have to fit into your life or go.

    Bachelor rooster

I have 3 chickens, 2 ducks and 5 geese. The chickens seem a bit more independent. While the waterfowl are virtually always together, the chickens seem content to be pecking and scratching on their own much of the time, but do hang out together at other times. At night, they tend to sit close...

How often do you change pool water?

Hi bernie and all. We have just under 3 acres. I have 5 geese, 2 ducks, 3 chickens. The ducks have a waterer which is the smaller black cement trough from a big box store with an inverted 7 gallon water jug tipped into it onto a couple of blocks so it gurgles water out as they drink. The jug...

Messy? Yes! I got my first ever goslings this past Spring. Three Pilgrims and 5 Chinese. They are so wonderful! But I find the whole water thing to be much more work than chickens. They slosh it all over and when in the brooder, soaked all of their bedding every single night. All that sloshing...

Rehoming Four Hens ... But they don't look so good :(

From what I have read, chicken lice does not transfer to humans. A nice dust bath of fine sand, a handful of wood ash and a handful of diatomaceous earth, available at many garden stores or the garden area of some big box stores, will help with mites as well as general chicken comfort. You can...

Can broiler hens live a normal life?

Well said, chickengeorgeto. Roosters do as nature directs them. I certainly have no problem with that. However, due to human efforts for a meatier chicken, these hens will have trouble holding up their own weight. The added weight of a rooster could easily damage their legs. In this case, it...

Review by 'Geggs' in article 'Buff Orpingtons Chicken Breed Information Pictures'

I enjoyed this article on your choice of Buff Orps when you are allowed only 5 birds. Loved the photos too, especially the chicks at "dino-stage." Thanks!

Can broiler hens live a normal life?

My understanding is that all of the chickens are standard birds except for these two 2 month old meat type hens and thus they do deserve protection from roosters who can be expected to do what roosters do if they get the chance.

Review by 'Geggs' in article 'To Insulate or Not to Insulate...'

I found this article well written and full of specifics which I'm sure will help me when I finally get my flock. I was especially heartened by the opening, in which the writer notes their own time of reading and dreaming and planning [my current state] prior to "taking the leap." Some other...

Re 4: I have used diatomaceous earth, available at most garden centers, for ant control. It works great. Scoop a little into a small strainer and gently shake over the area to be treated. If it gets scratched away or covered with other dirt, you must reapply. And be careful not to breath the...

    FAVORITES AND TRIALS

Thanks for the well-wishes oregonkat! I enjoy the forum very much. I have been "lurking" for a couple of years. Finally thought I'd join even though I have no livestock as yet. Not allowed where we live, and a few other practical reasons too, unfortunately. But I do keep dreaming...
