Update on Ana 💛
I just want to thank everyone here for your kindness and advice as I worked through this with Ana. I learned so much from you all and from our vet — it turns out it was an oviduct prolapse and she was far more compromised than I realized.
Because she was still laying and her...
ok - gotcha. it's been 2 or 3 days of calcium and the prolapse continues. based on your suggestion, i think i'll continue the calcium tomorrow and look forward to connecting with the vet as well tomorrow
thank you so much for sharing your experience so i can help poor Ana thru this. i know i'd...
thank you so much @A Swede in France 🤗 i called the vet first thing saturday morning but they are closed until tomorrow morning, so i've been doing what i can to help poor Ana.
b/c her prolapse doesn't seem to be improving, i'm very interested in helping her along with a vet
yes -- i'm also...
Good to know about the calcium! If I understand from your incredible post about prolapse, the intent is to reset the cycle (meaning achieve a hard-shelled egg) — is that right, @azygous?
Also - I’ve been holding her cloaca up to her vent after each warm soak, to help her take that in. She...
Day 3 - Ana's Prolapse
Miss Ana laid an egg this morning! It was hard-shelled, instead of the soft eggs that got us into this mess -- so that's got to be a good thing. I'm so grateful she wasn't bound 🙏🏼
I've been keeping up with daily:
- doses of calcium citrate + D3
- warm soaks in epsom
-...
Thank you so much @Wyorp Rock ! I’m so grateful for your help and insights 🙏🏼 I love this naughty little hen and I feel awful for her that I’m a beginner on this. I started feeding her mush yesterday afternoon, infused with rooster booster and save-a-chick — she’s happily eating, so I’ll offer...
This article is so helpful to me as I help my hen Ana go thru prolapse — it’s my first time and your share is downright instructive. The calcium citrate didn’t happen first, but it did happen and I’ll be sure to keep it up! Thank you thank you thank you 🙏🏼
Morning, folks == I’ve read through the 2022 prolapse article here on Backyard Chickens and have searched the Emergency/First Aid threads for similar cases — so many have been helpful, thank you to everyone who has shared their experiences.
Here’s what’s going on with my girl:

Thanks for your Qs @LaFleche !
I’ve never dewormed the flock (should I??). Last egg was perfect and yesterday, though she’s laid soft eggs before
B/c she’s the only one with trouble, it makes me wonder if it’s more like ‘she’s got reproductive/digestive problems’ rather than ‘this is an...
I'm posting here, hoping to draw on your experience and wisdom 🙏
Bloomers is an 11mo old light brahma who i've been keeping my eye on for a week. There was no acute injury or incident that I'm aware of.
Field observations:

Found this thread after my 3-year old Dark Brahma Fuzzball was diagnosed with zinc poisoning
She has 5-year old sisters that have never been sick
The galvanized hardware cloth we’ve used to protect the Run is the culprit. She tries to peck at the compost pile (left) through the screen and it...
So inspired by your article. Thank you @aart 🤗
My light Brahma babes are 3 weeks and have been out in the run since they were 1 week, doing ‘you can see, but no touching’ with the big girls.
When I’m back from the long weekend travel, I’ll add their panic doors.
Thanks for your awesome article!

It’s been over a year @dawg53 and I’m circling back to say you were right. I added a big yard - another 625 sq ft- in which they range all day every day. Mystery solved. They were bored and needed a bit more space
For ages I’ve been meaning to circle back to say thank you
THANK YOU @dawg53...
I just love this article and have read it several times over the years. Thank you @azygous !
I’m raising my third set of chicks up in Portland, ME. First mail-order babies, so started under a lamp. By day 4 we were taking field trips out to the big girl yard, supervised and with a baby-sized...
