    How much is too much???

I've been candling this batch a LOT, but I've just candled a couple when it wasn't around day 13 and then I'll do it again on day 18. For example, I did one full batch of candling at about 1 week/10 days to check for quitters - and then marked the ones I thought were questionable. At more...

    Candled at Day 7

Well here is a stupid question for you, is the top the skinny end and the bottom the fat end? Or other way around? And if it is porous, what does that mean?

    Candled at Day 7

Hi everyone I candled my eggs today at Day 7 and found a lot of varied stages in development it seems. I am using a homemade incubator which has had some interesting ups and downs in temp and a few in humidity, but has mostly stayed 95-101 and 50% (with the odd spike up to 70%ish but not for...

Feeding organic... cost of commercial vs. homemade feed?

I would be into this too. But as seems to be the trend with everyone, concerned about the costs involved. Will do a little of my own research and see what I can find.

    Enough heat?

That makes sense. I did a little fixing/fiddling and it seems to be a little more even now, but I'm slightly panicked that I may have fried the couple of egg that have been near the light source... time will tell I guess

    Enough heat?

Quote: Okay good to know! I have only moved them around twice so hoping no harm done as of yet. I'm thinking if I could put a second light bulb in the other side and just have them both at lower temps that would be better, but I can't exactly take my eggs out now to fiddle around with it...

    Enough heat?

It has been almost 24 hours since I put my 26 eggs into my homemade incubator. I have 2 thermometers in there, one is furthest away from the heat and one is very close, so I can monitor the eggs from all positions. The temp nearest the heat has never gone past 100F but the other thermometer...

    Incubator/Thermostat Question!

Thanks for the help/replies I decided to ditch the thermostat as I most definitely had the wrong one...and am now trying out just a plain and simple dimmer switch. I'm going to be watching it like a hawk, but I have had my incubator plugged in for solid periods of time for test runs and it...

    Uh Oh...

Ah, I have a feeing ping-pong may be exactly what I'll be doing! They have been in for about an hour, and it is slowly starting to creep up. I haven't seen it reach more than 102 so I'm hoping that it just doesn't have that capacity (if that makes sense)I have to leave shortly, but bf will be...

    Uh Oh...

I just received my eggs this morning, let them sit for a couple of hours and just put them in the incubator. Since putting them in though, the heat is stuck at 88 F and doesn't seem to be changing. Is this just because it is adjusting to the input of the eggs which were obviously cooler and will...

    Incubator/Thermostat Question!

Hi! I need some help with my thermostat on my home-made incubator. Basically I just have no idea how to wire it and how to set it for the temp that I want. I tried wireing it and it caused the outlet to spark when I put it in. Whoops. So obviously that isn't right! It looks like this one...

    Temperature Question!

Made an incubator today, it certainly is not a thing of beauty, but fingers crossed it will do the job! It is currently maintaining a temperature of 96.8-98 F. I've read it needs to be steady at 99.5. Is there a little wiggle-room for fluctuation? If so, how much wiggle room?

    Chicken run in forest?

Great, thanks for the replies everyone! I am hoping to just leave the trees where they are and fence around them, and have the coop in an open spot, maybe I could build them a ground floor tree fort for a coop! Haha! But electric fence is definitely a good plan! Thanks!

    Chicken run in forest?

I can't decide where to build my chicken run! We have 25 acres, however its not THAT straight forward. The open grass/pasture area I want to keep for my horse and cows, and goats. I could probably find room for the run, but it seems silly to use up pasture for them when I know that the chickens...

Keeping breeds seperate? Or just no roos?

Hi all, I am brand spanking new to the forum, but have been thoroughly enjoying all of the awesome info! I have a question - I am brand new to having chickens, well chickens of my own, we frequently had RIR's growing up. Anyhow, now I have ordered 3 dozen fertile eggs of some of the heritage...
