It's bigger than it looks. I realize now that there's nothing in the picture to use as reference. After double checking, the bars are not exactly, but closer to 1 inch than 3/4ths, and the size is 16 in deep, 20 in tall and 25 in wide.
I think I will look for a different cage though regardless...
I'm trying to figure out if this cage will work. It has 1 inch bar width and will budgies really get stuck in there? It just seems too small.
I'd appreciate some opinions, the size is so good for a budgie cage, nice and wide.
According to the thread I linked above, they can be sexed a few days after hatch. It's just not really common and most people seem to wait until they're sexually mature to foam sex.
I need to make some decisions pretty soon about which of my brood to keep though, as I really don't have space...
Hi!
I'm trying to sex my 3 week old coturnix quail, and having a hard time of it. I referenced the post https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-vent-sex-coturnix.150049/ several times, and have tried several times since they were a couple of days old to sex the babies. I felt my...
Wow, how did you get them to be so tame? I have a batch of two week olds and they were completely tame the first few days after hatch but then they got crazy skittish! Even though I interact with them every day.
I'm retaming them now and I can touch them and move in the cage a bit better, but...
I bought a mixed batch of eggs from eBay just a month ago. I got 9 babies to hatch from 14 eggs, and of them, I'm sure 1 is a "jumbo" tibetan. (The advertisement claimed there were jumbos in the mix)
He/she not only came out of the largest egg by far, but stands taller and broader than any of...
Hi! Coturnix is the same as Japanese quail, and there's no difference in color and egg laying or production. Any color will lay well and often.
There is a difference in size though, based on the "jumbo" varieties that were bred for larger physical size and larger eggs. Those seem to come in the...
Thanks everyone for the replies. I've actually found a small pet store that breeds their own babies, and they've got some beautiful little budgies in colors I've never seen in person.
Hopefully in the near future, but thanks for the information for now!
I've been doing a lot of research on budgies in anticipation of possibly getting one. I've experience with conures, cockatoos and cockatiels, and I'm stuck on two issues. Where best to get one, as there are only larger pet stores in my area and no breeders nearby that I can find online, and...
Omg, one of the chicks just died. I just heard sudden frantic peeping and looked, and it was on its back. Then it stumbled around the cage and lost energy until it began gasping and then passed.
It was the smallest, and I think the one born a day later than the rest. Sudden heart failure in a...
They did hatch fine, and I actually had a very successful hatch otherwise. They're happily chirping away behind me in my computer room, so I get to turn and see them snoozing or eating or playing. Makes the sad feel better to see them healthy.
I had the heat lamp bulb, the 250 watt for about a day before realizing that my setup was just too small for such large heat and I have no safe way to hang the lamp higher.
So I did the step down method instead and changed to a 60 watt bulb. It still puts out an easy 100 degrees directly...
Well, the last two eggs didn't make it. I opened them up enough to check, two fully formed chicks and one of them had even pipped internally. No clue what happened :(
This was my first hatching ever, and I used a DIY styrofoam incubator. It took me forever to figure out how to regulate that dang thing! Lol. We had some wild swings in temp here in Florida when I first set them too, but they made it through.
How many eggs can they hold? I'm curious about...
Still waiting for these last two eggs...
To keep everyone happy though, I put some sweet grass in the brooder with the babies. They immediately began scratching and then promptly fell asleep in it.
