We brooded chicks and ducklings once, not by choice, and it went great. The ducks and chicks loved each other. It came about by mistake. We got appleyard duck eggs from Craigslist and as a free bonus, the woman gave us what she thought were call duck eggs (3 of them). We were very surprised...
They have about 1/2 acre with lots of natural stuff - not like those photos but there are shrubs, trees, a pond, gardens (some fenced, some not). They do tend to congregate in areas, like at the house which is in the center of the area they have to roam.
The Sussex is like hunting her down...
We did separate the Sussex after the first attack and will do so tomorrow assuming this continues. The attacks are so vicious it is amazing to me. After years of quietly living together, these attacks seem completely uncalled for. The Brahma is a laid-back bird and tends to blend into the...
We haven’t changed anything other than
1 - we got two rabbits, but they are not housed with the chickens, and
2 - last week we started them on corid after getting a fecal float done on the flock. The Sussex had a heavy parasite load from the fecal float, and she just now laid her first egg for...
I saw some unusual behavior by my speckled Sussex hen today and would love input on how normal this is.
One hen (a Brahma bantam) that is third in the pecking order was dust bathing and a less dominant speckled Sussex (5th in pecking order) came from out of no where and jumped on the brahma’s...
Does anyone have recommendations for what I should use for a round worm infection now that Wazine has been discontinued?
I had a fecal float exam done by our state extension lab because some of our hens have been lethargic and one came back with a round worm infection (Ascaridia). I was...
Sorry I’m so slow to reply! Here is the most recent photo I have of him at 14 weeks. (He had to go to freezer camp so I’ll get no more photos of him.) Cockerel is on the left, pullet on the right.
FINALLY this little guy revealed himself - and started chasing the ladies yesterday. It is a cockerel!
I really appreciate everyone's input. This guy had (most) everyone fooled, but that is the way it goes with hybrids!
Thanks again to everyone who posted.
That is an interesting thought. Having looked more closely at photos of polish chickens just now, I agree.
We are still waiting for a final determination of sex on the one chick. It has not crowed yet, but I am leaning towards cockerel just based on looks - though there hasn’t been much of a...
I would love advice from experienced duck owners. We have 2 female silver appleyards that are 12 weeks old. They have started to get aggressive with our resident flock of 5 chickens (range from 1-4 years old). When the chickens get within 5 ft or so of the ducks, the ducks do this...
We don’t see much silkie either. We were told these two were black silkie/easter egger crosses but the only evidence of silkie is in the small size of these birds. Overall they look like small, black easter eggers. We love them. They have great personalities and are super friendly.
Well, some of you think pullet and others think it is a cockerel. We are obviously hoping for a pullet. It looks like we will have to wait and see if one starts crowing....
I made a mistake in my first post and was referring to the righthand photo. I guess I should have asked instead if both photos are pullets, or if one of the photos is a cockerel. Sorry! I’m really bad about getting my right and left mixed up!
Hi everyone, can you help me sex one 11 week-old silkie/easter egger mix? We know the first chick is a pullet. I put a photo here for comparison - she is standing all alone in this photo. The second chick (in background of photo on left) has slightly more pink and developed comb, but it is not...
Thanks for reaching out! We used generous amounts of shampoo and several changes of a warm soapy water bath and it got everything off. We just used human shampoo - probably about 1 cup total when it was all said and done. We didn't have any shampoo on hand specifically for animals. But it did...
One of our hens laid a soft shell egg on the roost last night. Now she has sticky egg on the feathers on her belly where she sat in egg all night. Any suggestions for how to clean the egg off her feathers? Soap and water works better than nothing but it is really tedious and not coming off easily.
All, can anyone tell me how normal it is for a 2 year old hen to be laying soft shell eggs during molt? I'm a little worried because some of this hen's eggs this summer had slightly thin shells. She's laying these soft shell eggs at night on the roost. She does this about once every 14 days...
