    Pros and cons of silkies…

Interesting. We once by mistake hatched some chicks that the seller in hindsight thought were silkie/Easter egger crosses (they were freebies from us buying appleyard eggs, and we all thought they were call duck eggs, until they hatched, LOL). Long story short, one of them we felt we had to cull...

    Pros and cons of silkies…

After years of thinking silkies were weird looking things that I’d never want to own, I’m now really intrigued by them. They keep coming up on google searches when I search for calm chicken breeds. They are kind of cute, in an odd sort of way. Can you all offer opinions on silkies that you’ve...

    Advice? Expected hatch rates

Of course I have to factor in that about half will be roosters…

    Advice? Expected hatch rates

Thanks for your replies! I was agonizing whether it would be too much if I ordered 4 times what I eventually want to hatch - essentially assuming 25% hatch rate. Now I wonder if that is not quite enough. I have 28 incubator spaces so maybe I’ll just get 28 then and fill up all the spaces. I only...

    Advice? Expected hatch rates

What should I expect for a hatch rate for buff orpington eggs shipped from Meyer Hatchery? For some background, I’m pretty experienced at both chickens and hatching. I have had chickens and ducks 10 years and raised a brood in the incubator most years. But I’ve only gotten local eggs before...

    Baths??

I’ll also give them a few treats and tidbits during the blow dry. Tiny bits of cheese, peanuts, stuff like that. I hope it makes the process more pleasant for them. (Yes, my chickens are spoiled :))

    Baths??

We occasionally have chickens with poop streaks on their bum feathers and I give them a butt bath in the kitchen sink with warm water, a little fragrance free shampoo, towel dry, and then blow dry while they stand on a towel next to the kitchen counter. I alternate between cool and warm air on...

How to orally medicate your chickens?

This helps a lot. Thank you. We were able to dose her this afternoon following these instructions with some squirming on the hen’s part but I’m sure we will get better with practice.

How to orally medicate your chickens?

What is the best way to force a hen to take powdered medicine? I’m thinking of mixing it with water and then I could use a dropper but how do I get her to open her bill? I’ve medicated my chickens for various things over the years by mixing medicines in food (ricotta cheese always works for me)...

My girl laid this. She wont eat or drink and just wants to stay in nesting box. Im scared for her.

LOL our chickens chase after voles when we are mowing. It is pretty funny to watch.

    Hen that displays male attributes?

This is unrelated to your specific situation but we had a hen once (a champion layer, by the way) who crowed like a rooster. Personally, depending on your specific goals I would give it time and see how they both develop in the same situation. It sounds like the one that laid a single egg was...

    Integrating new chicks

Yes, the adults can peck the chicks quite hard, probably even kill them. There is no love between them. I think you are doing quite well with your set-up. I can describe our set up if it helps. We have raised about 6 batches of ducklings and chicks from incubator to adults very peacefully. We...

How to stop two hens eating feathers

You might buy some grubs for them in the meantime. They are black soldier fly larvae - dried. We get ours from scratch and peck feeds (more expensive, but grown more locally in North America rather than in China like some other brands). Our chickens love them. Also, confinement can cause...

    Calmest chicken breed?

When ordering from Cackle Hatchery, several of the chicks were dead on arrival and the shipping was slow. If I recall they shipped the chicks priority mail and so the chicks were in the mail for a long time - like 5 or 6 days and over the weekend. It was so stressful for us. Also, the speckled...

    Calmest chicken breed?

We haven’t purchased from Meyer. Thanks for the tip. I’ve seen other good reviews for Meyer on BYC so it is good to hear another one. The first couple of years we had chickens we purchased from Ideal poultry and Cackle hatchery. We got our Brahma bantams from Ideal and I love their...

    Calmest chicken breed?

Where did you purchase your Sussex? I have always wondered if the Sussex we got from cackle hatchery was at all representative of the breed, other than by outward plumage appearance. There were other traits that she had that were inconsistent with what I had read about Sussex. In general, I am...

    Calmest chicken breed?

We put a fence around our property so ground predators are not an issue (also we’re are not afraid to preemptively “defend” our property from ground predators). Hawks are an issue however and the lazier calmer chickens work better because they loiter around the buildings more.

    Calmest chicken breed?

I have not heard of sapphire gems. Are they a breed, or a color within the australorps breed? Also, please tell me where you purchased your birds. I should have requested that info in my original post.
