Here is the space before we built the coop and run. You can see where the concrete and asphalt meet if you look closely. And that is the old azalea bush I took out in the garden by the coop where most of the water is getting in.
You know, I thought about that but I wondered why they added it- is it somehow helping the concrete or is there something going on there that I would uncover if I removed it? I am friendly with the lady who grew up in the house so I may ask her if she knows why the asphalt was laid around the...
No, not all sides, just the two front corners. Yes, I am thinking of adding a drain pipe to the side by the coop as it has more water coming in than the side with the rain barrel. It will be fairly easy to dig a trench and put in a drainage pipe as that side is an old flower garden. If that...
It seeps in along the concrete and under the wall framing. Occasionally with wind the rain may spray through but it is minimal and minor. The pine shavings look so gross and do nothing for absorption so I wondered if wood chips would handle the water better and since they're more substantial in...
Thanks for the replies! No the garage side of the run is dry. No water comes in where the roof and garage meet. The water seeps in at the two front corners on the floor. No big puddles or standing water, just damp-wet. The chickens seem to like the rain coming in at the section under the coop...
I just moved my 5 week old hens into their coop and run over the weekend. The coop is raised with a wood floor so I use pine shavings and its nice and dry and fine. The covered run has a concrete floor and the first night and day it rained and I did not have gutters so the rain dripped down the...
I have 8 mixed flock chicks that are 1 week old today. My neighbor ordered 5 new chicks after a disastrous order last week and they will be arriving tomorrow. If all of them come alive, she will be giving 1 to me as she only wants 4. I am happy to take it but I do not have a separate area for...
Thanks so much for all your support! I didn't notice any gaping today, just some head twitching. There do seem to be a couple chicks with diarrhea but I'll just keep an eye on them. I discontinued Nutri-drench yesterday and now just offer the acv water with garlic they have been given from the...
Yes, forgot to mention they are getting chick grit mixed in with their feed. So no scrambled eggs either? I have only been giving a tiny handful of it every morning to train them which is working wonderfully. Really appreciate your help!
I just noticed one of my Australorp chicks twitching her head and gaping. No noise came from her mouth. She is eating, drinking and otherwise acting normal except every so often she will do this. I have 8 chicks total and they have had earthworms twice in the past 3 days. Am I overreacting or...
I couldn't get that link to work but I'm now thinking that I have 3 RIR and 1 SS. I think it was my partridge Plymouth rock that didn't make it. It's just throwing me off because one of the RIR chicks has distinctive stripes down her back that the other 2 did not have.
Wow, I never looked at their eyes! Crazy! The one with thin stripes has one little black stripe from behind her eye. I couldn't get a good shot of her. The one with broad stripes has brown marks around her eyes (see picture attached).
I ordered 8 chicks yesterday and one died on the way. My order was 3 Rhode Island reds, 2 Australorps, 1 barred Plymouth rock, 1 partridge Plymouth rock and 1 speckled sussex. I had thought the speckled sussex died but now I'm wondering if it was the partridge Plymouth rock. The light and dark...
