It wasn't hot in there and I didn't see any evidence of cocci (man I hope that isn't it!). We had about 200 in a 10x8 space with 4 of the big plastic waterers and 6 or 7 feeders. Sold 25 on Saturday so now the numbers are down to about 163. I swapped out the plastic waterers for a giant...
Had a horrible surprise this morning when i went to feed the babies. There were 11 dead chicks on the floor. They had not been pecked but seem to have been trampled to death. When I checked on them again in the afternoon, there was another victim. They have plenty of room and it is definitely...
We want to run our pullets out in the orchard this spring/summer but have serious predator issues (coyotes, racoons and eagles). So we're going to put them in tractors but we're not sure what to do about the floor. We want them to be able to forage and dig for bugs but we notice that with the...
One of my leghorns has some kind of infection. The area all around her eye is extremely inflamed and there is yellow and watery discharge coming out of it. She also has discharge coming out of her nose. There was a little blood in it today. I've been irrigating the eye regularly and treating...
So 5 turkey hens just kind of fell out of the sky so I thought I'd see if I could fatten them up in time for Christmas. They're only 8-10lbs now. What's the best way to get some weight on these girls in the next few weeks? Also, I need to decide if I'm going to keep them with the chickens in the...
Lucky you! I'm very jealous. I have 9 chickens ranging in age from 4.5 to 7 months and I think they're all under the impression that this is just a free hotel I'm running here. The oldest girls are my 2 Polish and a Blue Andalusian. The Mottled Houdan, Orpington and Australorp are next followed...
Thanks so much for your input everyone. The Wyandotte is going back but I'll hang onto the BO a little longer. She/he isn't getting any redder and the tail looks very pullety so I really hope she'll turn out to be a pullet. We raised 10 of them and the rest are all gone and the other one is...
Vitamin E capsules are wonderful for this sort of thing. Just puncture the capsule and put the oil on the burn. Heals very well and provides a barrier too. Going to be hard to keep clean though. Might want to rig up some rooster socks?
This beautiful girl adopted me a few weeks ago. I went with a friend to pick up his new chicks and she jumped into my arms, snuggled in and stayed there so I had no choice but to take her home. She's so beautiful and just the sweetest thing! We named her Bissous which is french for kisses...
These are supposed to be girls but the Buff has a larger comb than the rest of the girls and the neck feathers are longer and pointier. The Wyandotte just looks awfully red in the face to be a girl... whaddya think? They're both a couple of months old.
We've recently had this problem with a Chantecler and a Buff Orpington. The Chantelcler is worse and we clipped her beak a bit to make it easier for her to eat which seems to have helped. She wasn't developing as quickly as the others but seems to be coming along nicely now. The Buff looks...
Oh I have no intention of culling her as long as she's ok. I'm just worried about her. She's quite a little bully so I think she can hold her own... just worried about her health.
still can't find the stupid camera cable but cabot's pic is pretty close with the baby fuzz and ugly feathers. With the crossed beak too, she really looks pitiful.
I have another Chantecler from the same place that looks great so I'm pretty sure she's a Chantecler.
I wanted to post some pictures but I can't find the cable for my camera so you'll have to use your imagination....
I have a 5 week old Chantecler that looks like it was beat with the ugly stick. She has a crossed beak and seems to be forever stuck in that in-between fuzz and feather stage. She...
We had a very weak baby the other day. We took turns holding her on our chests under our shirts and getting as much sugar water and then food into her as she got stronger. After about 8 hours she was doing much better so I put her back in the brooder and she's doing just fine now.
