Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

Great shot! I know it's best for their safety which is why I captured both & locked them up before I even called. Though they had been out there with him unbeknownst to me. I just didn't know that they'd be on house arrest for so long & now that I do I'd like to improve their accommodations...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

Thanks for your suggestions. She had flockmates, but sadly she is the last one left and I think I'm done with chickens. They're great fun & produce the tastiest eggs, but their deaths or disappearances are just a little much for me. I've had to dispatch 2 myself and though I watched many videos...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

How'd you end up in Florida? ;) I'm a little creepy about lakes. I've had snakes inside my house back when we had back to back tropical storms they were just looking for dry land.

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

Huh I've only heard the phrase "lower 48" from Alaskans. Yes, we have bears too, but they're more prevalent in the panhandle & central Florida. We have coyotes very close by too & they like to eat dogs. They'll clear a 6 foot fence to get to a dog. Gators will climb a fence or dig under to get...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

I'm with you regarding news & social. I might take her into the front yard for a field trip of sorts, but kind of don't want to draw the neighbors attention, so may need to wait until next week. I hang out with them for a little while a few times a day and of course change the water bowl a few...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

Oh and just an FYI you're safe in most of the springs because of the temperatures since they have plenty of much warmer bodies of water. Go get in those springs - they'd feel great about now!!

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

I've thought of that too, but I'm not a fan of local news since they mostly instigate negativity & sensationalize BS. I called the gator hotline like a good citizen & will say the FWC has been pleasant it's just the assigned trapper that is not communicating. I'd just like to know the plan of...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

I've learned alot about gators this week!! $5000 fine & 5 years in the big house. I'm in North Florida and live in a neighborhood and this is a first in my 60+ years!

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

I just learned today that they have 45 days and then if nothing done another permit is issued. Today's nee knowledge is why I'm inquiring about long term ideas since naively I assumed it'd be gone by now. The pool is a good idea. Should be interesting to see if he killed anything else overnight...

They're protected in Florida, so you notify the state & they then deem the gator a nuisance and issue a permit to a contracted trapper.

Thanks for your reply. I was advised to call the trapper daily by the state authorities- maybe they've had issues with him previously & they're testing his response times

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

Thanks! It's in my pool so basically 3 feet from my back door and though not large still a 5 foot apex predator. I did go out & water a few potted plants that are wilting, though one I completely missed the pot/plant because I kept my eyes on him. I did give her some frozen pineapple today which...

Chicken stressed in lock-up because of alligator in yard

I hope I've chosen the proper category to post in for my problem; if not, kindly advise. You see I've had an alligator show up on Monday afternoon & since then my poor chicken & the yard cat have been locked up on the screen porch for safety. No more free-ranging until it's been removed. Neither...

    General Wormer?

Thanks for replying! No, I've never dewormed any of my chickens and am apprehensive about deworming them since I don't know if they even have worms. I just know they have dirty bums & would prefer them to be clean & fluffy. Could there be any other reason for untidy bums?

    General Wormer?

I have 3 Hens. 2 have a dirty rear end, they'll be a year old in May. They're laying daily, eating & acting normal. Poop seems normal & have never seen worms. I realize that not all parasites are visible to the naked eye. I'm unable to get a fecal float done. The other hen has a nice clean bum...

Chickens going off feed & refusing to eat it

Guess it's been a week or so of feeding the Bluebonnet Gamebird Feed & the girls have adjusted to eating it. It took a day, but after having soaked whole grains & scrambled eggs I expected them to frown upon it, at first. I'm not thrilled with it being soybean first & containing calcium as have...

    Only two hens

My chicken keeper life began when a stray chicken appeared in my pool. The next year I got 2 chicks and 2 years later I got 2 more chicks. In December 22 one of the 2nd batch died & in Jan the original stray died. All that being said my stray was a lap chicken until she got the 2 friends who...

Can my chicken be friends with a stray cat?

I had a stray show up years ago & he's been friends with all the chickens. At the time he showed up I just had 1 chicken who was also a stray. Now I have 3 chickens & he's just as friendly with them. In fact, they try to eat his food & he walks away from them. He doesn't show up everyday. I had...
