Welcome to BYC. I took ages to register too, instead lurking on the forums and seeking interesting tidbits to make things go better for me.
I keep silkies and faverolles, although I do have a small flock of "just layers" that include RIRs and Black Sex Links. I also have turkeys, ducks...
Welcome to BYC.
I have to admit, even coming from a country family where livestock was...livestock, I name them. I have Blackbeard, the faverolle hen with way too much black in her beard, the Mafia Girls, who used to rule the backyard and beat up everybody else, etc. Everybody laughs about my...
I had a devil of a time finding information on the HOW to get NPIP certification. I could find a ton of online information about how the tests were done, why they were important, what the history was, etc. but nothing on who to call or how to actually get the tests done.
Obviously, it's...
I have a handful of RIR hens, although they were sold to me as wyandottes. I also have a duo of black sex links, which were accurately marked. The black sex links are in my "just layer" groups, along with the RIR hens. Both are good layers in hot weather, which is important when you live in...
Welcome to BYC. I can sympathize on the dog causing some losses. We too have one that is murderous, and of course, she only kills the expensive show quality hens too, never the hatchery specials that you keep just for breakfast eggs! I guess it's the joy of free ranging your chickens, since...

The one thing that will make the most improvement on your hatch rates is to go to a forced air incubator. It can make a huge difference in your hatch rate. For many incubators, there are retro-fit kits, but a forced air incubator isn't super expensive.
I had been referring on occasion to this site for some time. Since I'd recently seen a photo of a hen similar to my "halflings", I wanted to comment...so I finally bothered to create an account.
As for photos, I'll have to get better about that. I'm not particularly well known for my photos...
I actually have a handful of chickens that look like this. They are absolutely gorgeous, and they are the result of a partridge silky rooster and laying hens, probably one of the Rhode Island Reds. They are pretty enough that I'm growing them out, and may continue with the breeding of a...
I raise salmon faverolles and silkies, as well as turkeys and ducks (khaki campbell, as well as rouen are hatching as I type). I also keep quail right now. I'm not new to raising poultry, as I've done it my entire adult life, at least when I lived somewhere it was allowed!
I'm not currently...
