Unfortunately, mine do, too. That's why I keep two waterers in the brooder and clean them out about twice a day. Chicks just make a mess out of the water. They get better as they get older, but those first weeks I do a lot of cleaning out the waterers.
That's never been a problem for me. If it was, I think I would try something like this...
I have a hot glue gun that would attach a funnel to the jar just fine. It would be pretty hard for a chick to get on top of that funnel!
Nice find! Those post hole diggers can last a lifetime if you take care of them.
Well, that, and I imagine most people do not use them very much. I bought two post hole diggers about 30 years ago for around $25.00 each and they don't get used much. So, they are still in great shape. I seem to...
:woot I need to do a quick shout out to WalMart Automotive shop here where I live. I had a front tire on one of my riding mowers that was going flat. The bead had broken over the winter and it was slowly leaking air. I could fill up the tire with air in the morning and run the machine all day...
Looking good!
⚠️ Yeah, that cement panel looks big and heavy. Be careful you don't drop it any of your chickens and break their backs.
That's what I did with my (much smaller and lighter) pop door. I figure even a smart racoon would have a problem digging into the slot to lift the door.
I...
Sounds like your setup is a lot different than mine. My coop is in the backyard all by itself, exposed to all the elements.
I think you will really like having a rope and pulley type of system for the pop door. Having it on the outside of the run so you don't have to go inside all the time...
I have a similar setup but my sliding door and the rope are all inside my coop. I normally get lots of snow here in northern Minnesota and I knew that I would be better off with the sliding door inside the coop, as well as the rope system because I did not want to have to deal with a frozen rope...
We all make mistakes. Good to hear that your chickens are normally safe from predators if locked up at night. I know my chicken run is predator resistant, but not predator proof. My coop is like Fort Knox. But yeah, they have to be inside the coop with the doors closed to keep them safe after dark.
Looks like just another benefit of having a hügelkultur raised bed!
BTW, I noticed that those 4X4 posts look like they were cut in half and stacked. Did you buy a raised bed kit like that or did you make your own?
I like the idea of easily slipping in boards into the groves of those posts...
:welcome Welcome to the BYC forum.
Sorry you are having problems with your neighbors. They sound like idiots.
I lived next door to an older couple for about 20 years before they passed on. We had a great relationship. In fact, I get along with all my neighbors. But a young couple bought that...
First of all, sorry for your loss. That is a hard thing to go through.
I have never had an adult rooster so I cannot speak from experience. But I can imagine that he might still be in shock from the attack. It may take some time for him to heal emotionally. I really am just guessing.
I don't...
Just wanted to ask if you have considered how your chicken was attacked and what you need to do to strengthen your coop/run defenses for the chickens. In my experience, predator attacks don't normally go away on their own.
:welcome Welcome to the BYC community!
If you keep your chickens in a separate chicken run, how would they pose any problem to your pet birds? I have 2X4 wire fencing for my run, so small birds can get in/out of the chicken run all the time. But my chickens show no interest in the wild birds.
I would not butcher any chicken that I thought was unhealthy. It's just not worth the risk to me or my family.
Can you wait a few days to see if the rooster recovers and/or dies on its own? You might be able to make a better decision if you wait a bit.
Good luck.
:old I am just stuck on my old methods, and I am not saying it's the best system, either. If I was just starting out, I probably would have chosen something else for my brooder setup today. None of those brooder plate or brooding tent options existed when I started with chicks 30+ years ago. At...
I do that as well. Two waterers in different locations in the brooder.
After the first couple of days, and I am certain that the chicks know where to get their water, I will start putting it on small pieces of wood just enough to get it up and off the litter and keep it a bit more cleaner. As...
