I would definitely have to say skirts are a great idea. That's something I still haven't done and regret it. Dang chickens like scratch at the edge if I dont let them out and are making holes on the inside of the coop.
Also, insulation of some kind is a good idea for the coop. After spending a...
If money isn't an issue, I'd recommend dog kennel fencing. You can build it high enough for you to walk under and place a roof on it for both shade and protection from the elements and predators. We bought one from tractor supply that came with roof panels and a tarp. You can obviously build...
We bought 2 Egger chicks from TSC in Mar or Apr, same deal for us, I think they're laying brown eggs, I know it's theirs cuz they are significantly smaller than the others. What's really weird is they look kinda like a leghorn.
Ok guys, I already have 3 Wyandotte Silvers that are about 2 yrs old, just bought 4 chicks, 2 Easters n 2 Brahmas, when should I introduce the chicks to the hens?
Should I wait til its warmed up enough to put them outside or wait til they are pullets?
The silvers I have now I didn't put outside...
The hole is closed and yes, me or my neighbor will kill the owl. We both have chickens, he's lost a couple too.
And yes it legal to kill predators in my area if they are killing livestock. I spoke to the Game Wardens when we had a hawk problem.
No they sleep in a box. You can't even stick a pinky through the fencing I have on the coop. However, there was an open space on top. That's probly how the owl got in.
Spoke to my dad after I posted this. For those that don't already know, he told me owls n coons like to eat just the heads. We have an owl that flies around sometimes so it made sense to me that's the culprit. Hard part is gonna be killin it cuz I'm not staying up all night to wait for it...
Its as gruesome as it sounds. In the past month I've lost 7 chickens and only found 3, dead in the coop. The weird ones are the last 2 I found today inside the coop. They were partly skinned and nothing missing but their heads! Its so weird, I have no idea whats going on! And yes the coop was...
If you've got toddlers or pets, I'd say get some Wyandotte chicks. Great demeanor around kids, ours like to come over and get pet, sometimes they try to get in the truck with us if we leave the doors open. We've had ours since April and they've gotten to where they'll let me pick them up without...
All my chickens are finally laying, I'm gettin between 6 to 12 a day! I need some ideas what to do with them all. We can only eat so many eggs. How long could I store them before taking to a market? I give some to church n family, but I've still got a bunch. Ideas?
I had been using fake eggs until they had been laying for about 2 weeks, then I took them out. I'll probly put them back in. And I have been keeping them cooped up til about noon this week, seems to be working so far.
My chickens are finally beginning lay, the only problem is I'm finding a few eggs on the porch instead of the coop. Any suggestions how to insure they lay in their coop? And no smart ass answers like keep them in the coop.
