I've had something with similar symptoms kill my purebred turkeys in the past. The barnyard mixes seem much more resistant to it. I believe it to be something my chickens carry that doesn't affect them, but is much harder on the big birds. I'm sorry, I don't know what it could be though.
I have a bunch of Bourbon Red/Sweetgrass poults. Is it possible they could be sexed by feather color? I have my suspicions about their sexes already. They are a week old.
My turkey hen sat on a rock for 3 weeks, then at the start of week 4 we gave her 4 eggs out of the incubator. They hatched two days early, so she really only sat on them for 2-3 days. After a couple of days of her appearing to be quite shocked, she turned into a fantastic mother.
"Safe" Guard was named by the people marketing it to you, the consumer. You're not going to buy something called Liquid Toxicity, now, are you? And the Chicken Chick is a lawyer by trade, not a veterinarian. She also states in that article that she feeds her chickens pumpkin with seeds once a...
If your chickens spent any time pecking at the ground and it's spring, chances are they have a parasite load of some sort.
Safeguard (fenbendazole) is toxic to chickens, and can cause newly grown feathers to be deformed. Same as I don't use glyphosate on my garden, I won't use fenbendazole on...
I don't deworm unless I see signs of trouble (ie worm eggs in droppings), for a couple of reasons: 1. I would have to throw away all eggs laid for a week and that would be a LOT and 2. Worms develop tolerance and immunity to deworming chemicals, so technically, the more you use the less...
I will say that chickens are omnivores, and SHOULD have animal protein in their diet. Here in Canada it's not legal for me to buy chicken feed with any animal protein in it, so I buy lower % protein feeds (16% layer pellets) and add ground fish based dog food to it. The difference in my birds...
I thought that was an urban myth. Uncooked rice is no different than any other uncooked grain (wheat, oats, rye, barley) but it definitely isn't a nutritionally complete food.
Antibiotics would be best, but if that's not possible make a tea from thyme and oregano leaves and put it in her water. Thyme is amazing for lung function and oregano has some antibacterial properties.
Good for you to take those steps to try to save her life. Obviously there is something serious going on internally, but you probably relieved some pain and pressure and have afforded her some quality of life.
All flock feeds tend to be lower in calcium than straight layer feed, and higher in protein than 16%. One of the feeds I use is considered a layer/breeder crumble, at 18% protein and 2.5% calcium. I'ts meant to feed CHICKENS of all ages; I don't believe it to be appropriate for ducks or other...
How big are your properties? How close are your houses? How many chickens? Hundreds? A dozen? Three?
Honestly, if my neighbor had any animal that I didn't enjoy seeing in my yard I would throw up a fence. You're not going to change his mind about the way he lives and escalating things by...
