Thanks, I didn't think of that. I'll have to look into it.

Araucana chick with very scraggly feathers

We bought them from someone online (in NZ, Trademe). We got 6 eggs and put them under a broody hen, and these were the 2 that survived.

Araucana chick with very scraggly feathers

Hi everyone, Hope you're all staying safe and staying home. We have two 7 week old araucana chicks which we hatched from eggs, one is feathering very well and the other looks rather scraggly (see photos below). Does anyone know why this might be? Also any ideas on whether they might be hens or...

Impacted Crop or Something else, help!

Nope, she hasn't been broody. Still looks and feels the same this morning, it feels like a squishy beanbag. I noticed that she has pooped overnight (a great big sloppy one, thanks!!) so at least some food is getting through. I'm 80% sure it is impacted crop, but the redness is still worrying...

Impacted Crop or Something else, help!

I'll take some pictures of her standing tomorrow morning. I'm quite sure it's her crop, but it could be her belly. We're new to chickens so still learning! What's the best way to tell if it's her belly? Her roost is pretty much a 2x4, so I wonder if it could be that? That might explain the...

Impacted Crop or Something else, help!

Thanks so much for your reply. I will read these articles in depth soon. I came home after work and gave her more oil and massaged her for as long as she'd let me. The crop feels squishy now, not hard like this morning but is still very very red. I have attached photos. I havent noticed her...

Impacted Crop or Something else, help!

Hi can you help?? We're quite new to backyard chicken keeping, we've had ours for about 6 months now. A couple of days ago we noticed that our two big black orpingtons have lost feathers on their chests. We thought it was due to mites, so we treated the coop and the chickens and hoped for the...

    Hole in egg

I'll get a picture and post soon. It could be the height of the nest she is using? It's lower to the ground than our other one. Do you think that could be the cause of the cracked eggs?

    Hole in egg

We were using straw, but they kept scratching all of it out before they went in there to lay so we switched it to shavings to see if that made a difference. No eggs yesterday, but I'll see what happens today!

    Hole in egg

We've got some shavings in there at the moment. I'll get a picture and post soon.

    Hole in egg

We got these about 3 weeks ago. We sold 2 of our barred rocks and bought 2 older/larger orpingtons. This was a good move because now these 2 orpingtons are top of the pecking order and the 2 remaining barred rocks are in the middle so they're a lot less mean to the other 2 orpingtons we have...

    Hole in egg

Hi there, can anyone help?? We recently bought 2 black orpingtons. We've noticed that the last 3 eggs they have layed have a hole or crack in them, always in the same spot. We have fake eggs in the boxes, we've been feeding them oyster shell and we're really not sure what's going on. The eggs...

    Barred Rock Bullies

Whoops, sorry I got the measurements wrong!! It's 1.2x2.4m. They only spend time in the coop at night when roosting, the rest of the day they are in the run or sometimes we let them free range.

    Barred Rock Bullies

Hi, from what we were told the BR are 4.5 months old now and the Orpington's should be too, but when we picked up the Orpington's they seemed too small to be 4 months old. I'd guess they're more like 3.5 months. None are laying yet. The coop is 1.2x0.6m (photos attached - we have altered it...

    Barred Rock Bullies

Oh interesting, I didn't know that the more dominant females would take on the rooster's role but that's very handy. None of them are laying yet (not even the BR though they are close I think) so perhaps as they start to lay they will mature a bit more. We have multiple water and food spots...

    Barred Rock Bullies

Thanks for your advice Cindy. We'll give them a month or so and see if things settle down. It's hard not to step in, but yes the Orpington's do need to learn to stand up for themselves, you're right. Hope your cows are well!!
