    Abnormal bone growth?

Did you ever figure out what this was? I have a 9 week old black copper maran that has the same thing. I just discovered it today although I noticed a few weeks ago that her wing on that side hangs down a bit. Doesn’t seem to bother her at all. Perhaps her head movement is a little limited but...

    Enlarged crop

I searched the forums and found instructions for creating a crop bra out of a sock. My girl is a pretty beefy bird so those ideas didn't work exactly, but gave me some ideas to try. Eventually, the only thing that worked was creating a tube using the foot of a mens sock with the toe and ankle...

    Swedish Flower

Update on these two Swedish Flowers...they are now about 11-12 weeks old. Non-crested Elsa has a more pronounced pink/red comb. Crested Anna has a smaller pink comb. Neither has wattles. I can see Elsas comb is obviously much bigger but the hens have big red combs so I wasn’t sure especially...

    Enlarged crop

I have a 4 year old barred rock who has had an enlarged crop for a few days now. I notice she also hitches up her right leg once and a while when she walks. I've checked her out and don't notice any other issues/lumps/bumps, however, she's been molting a bit lately as well. Not sure if it's...

    Swedish Flower

Oh no! The lighter brown chick has big feet/legs. Combs look the same between the two.

Ok thank you! I’ll keep checking them.

    Swedish Flower

What characteristics are reliable and at what age do they develop? I’ve been reading on the forums and people generally tend to focus on comb size and color, but I’m guessing they are too young yet to start displaying the more obvious cockerel characteristics?

    Swedish Flower

You sound like an expert to me! (Because that’s what I was hoping for🙂) Yes there are just two. One brown and one black. Couldn’t get the best picture of the brown ones comb but it’s similar to the other - small, yellow/pale. I’ll check the rail feathers of both to see if their posture is...

    Swedish Flower

Just got these little ones. They are 3-4 weeks old. Any guesses as to whether they are boys or girls? What are the obvious external characteristics to look for at this age and/or over the next few weeks?

UCDavis report- Can someone help me understand this report

Wow that is one gorgeous coop set-up. I’d ditch the coop kleen. I know it’s treated so less susceptible to mold but straw is the worst for mold growth. Have you ever bought a bale for Halloween decorations? They get moldy from the inside out. Moisture from the air and droppings will cause mold...

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

So glad UC Davis is relatively close. I’m going to call UCDVMC tomorrow and see if they will do a consult over the phone to get recommendations on eliminating/controlling Marek’s in the coop. I’m thinking they would have the most current knowledge around the virus. BYC has been such a great...

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

Go the report back. She had Marek's. I suspect the other hen I lost a few weeks ago had the same. I have two more girls from that same group of chicks and two more that I got nearly a year later. I suspect they are all infected. From what I've read, that's likely the case. Will call the vet and...

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

Thanks for following up. Not yet. Brought her in on Monday morning and was told it would take a few days to get preliminary results and 10 days for full results. Hope to hear soon in case it's something the other girls may be susceptible to. I did get panacur c and vet rx from the feed store...

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

So poor little girl died this evening. She seemed like she was back to normal (albeit more sedate because she was secluded from the others) so I was surprised when she took a turn and the symptoms returned (gaping, dark comb). Taking her to UC Davis for necropsy tomorrow to make sure the rest of...

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

I believe she is breathing normally and no more craning/gaping. Her comb color and posture are back to normal. It may sound crazy but I think she may have had something caught in her throat.

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

Yes she was stretching her neck out with beak open, not making any sounds. Didn’t stretch it around, just straight out. And she would close her eyes when she did it. I have her in isolation with food and fresh water in case it is something contagious.

Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

I flipped her upside down to look down her throat for obstruction. Didn’t see anything so poured a little water down there to see how she would react (don’t worry, not water boarding or anything but seemed worth a shot if she was choking). She shook it off but she’s perked up since. She’s...
