Oops, sorry, forgot to clarify that part! When hatched and sexed, the males would then be raised and butchered at the appropriate time for the freezer. :)
But of course, you are right. I need to be more strong willed and keep our goals in mind. If I can just do that then this choice will...
That’s the dilemma I’m having as of this moment. I’m internally struggling between having a colorful flock with colorful eggs and colorful personalities over just surefire egg and meat producers lol. I think I have 8 different breeds on my spring chick list as of right now. :idunno My husband...
I would definitely love to be given the opportunity to win a nesting box like this. I can easily envision this coming in handy this winter as the girls get a bit restless in the colder Kentucky weather. As the daylight hours grow shorter their time outside is understandably near and dear to...
:lau Good answer, lol! I like the way you think! I’d have one of each breed if I could as well. My husband on the other hand is the more practical one as his go to breed would be white leghorns, hands down.
If you could only have one breed for the rest of your days, what would it be? What is the one chicken that will always have a place in your coop (and heart) and why? :)
Just curious to see all the responses and reasonings because I may or may not be needing to see what else I can add to my...
Might I suggest bantam ameraucanas and bantam Rhode Island reds? :) I’ve never personally owned an ameraucana (shocking, I know) but I have had RIRs and the ones I’ve had were certainly friendly and very nice layers. You can find both of these breeds on Murray McMurray hatchery’s website.
Very true. I should have clarified that temperament is more for my own personal enjoyment, a bonus if you will, rather than an actual requirement. Nasty dispositions do not last long around here. I just like to have breeds that are as happy to see me as I am them. I have no shame in admitting I...
Thank you for the sex link info and recommendations Compost King! I didn’t even think about the white rocks being this way. I know using white leghorns is a no no but didn’t even consider this also holding true with the rocks as dumb as it sounds.
I will definitely look into the ranger x...
Thank you NatJ! That’s exactly what I plan to do with these chicks further down the road. Where I’m at in eastern KY the consensus is that if you’re going to have chickens then they need serve a dual purpose (eggs and meat). There’s no point not using the whole bird both in life and death...
I’m drafting up my spring chick order (I know, super early but I can’t help myself; I love doing my research  ) and keep going back and forth on these two breeds. Which is the better layer and more friendly of the two? I’m essentially looking for an excellent layer that can be...
I second McMurray hatchery. For a hatchery I believe they have nice stock. The chicks I received when I ordered from them were hearty, friendly and very productive once grown. Their customer service is great as well so I definitely am considering ordering from them again in the spring.
However...
It goes without saying, but...
Tractor supply is notorious for mislabeling the breed of chicks they’re selling so I would not be surprised in the slightest if they’ve mislabeled the gender of their chicks as well.
Also, like many have stated before, a 90% guarantee is pretty darn good with...
I completely understand this. But I’ve decided I’m just going to go with a hatchery and avoid the headache and hassle of grooming through hundreds of breeders in hopes of getting a bird that might lay a quality egg. I’d rather just enjoy my flock as they are with no expectations and I have come...
