The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

I’m confident he’s a Svart Hona. Greenfire has not ever steered me wrong on what they send. I’m more asking about health issues, vigor, etc from the woolly trait (aka cull or not).

Outstanding information. Quarantine should be a routine practice for poultry owners but unfortunately seems uncommon in many circles. Thanks for helping everyone take care of their flocks!

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

I finally got around to taking decent photos. They were taken in bright sunlight so you can see the feather difference between the cockerel and pullet

The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Hello all. I have two SH chicks from a GFF RBA assortment. One is becoming a woolly now that feathers are coming in. Is there a consensus on the woollies? Are they less vigorous? More cold sensitive? Remove from breeding stock? Or do they just look odd and are otherwise normal?

Autopsy of a little chick. Autopsy pictures caution. Please help!

I would hesitate to state that definitively. True, it is not a classic presentation but you can see animals with mild changes of their organs and no enlargement of the bursa. It’s still worth considering until she can have testing done to rule it and other things out.

Autopsy of a little chick. Autopsy pictures caution. Please help!

I do think Gumboro is a possibility given the symptoms and your location. However, it’s just a guess without testing and other things could also cause these signs

Autopsy of a little chick. Autopsy pictures caution. Please help!

Have you tried contacting your Ministry of Agriculture? They have divisions in both the north and south and do offer poultry testing. Their services are typically for larger operations but they might be able to assist an independent flock. It’s worth contacting them and asking at least. It would...

My hen' beak got chewed off and her face is SUPER swollen, how can I help with the inflammation?

@slordaz, I in no way meant to stress her. People were certainly doing their best to help and giving her options. That’s merely all I was doing, mentioning an option that had not yet been suggested. I know vets who see chickens are not in every area and I recognize even if one is in the area...

My hen' beak got chewed off and her face is SUPER swollen, how can I help with the inflammation?

I hate to be the naysayer here but it’s reasonable given her injuries to consider seeking veterinary care. Both amoxicillin and penicillin from the feed store have a narrow spectrum of efficacy for the bacteria they target. This is typically good given the liberal use by some facilities/flocks...

I don’t have any hatching eggs left but have chicks of several breeds, most less than a week old, if you’re not just looking for eggs.

    East Frisian Gulls

Thank you. That is very helpful. I ended up with a pair of day old chicks in a random assortment and am trying to determine if they’ll stay or maybe go to a friend’s flock. Sounds like they aren’t very affectionate like some other breeds. I don’t necessarily want a lap chicken but ones that...

Did you ever get a chance to try out the plan you found? I’m looking for something similar and am curious how it came out.

    Wifi Cam

We use Arlo Pro 2 for the coop. The coop is about 250 ft from the camera base station and it works beautifully. Not sure what type of long range you need. They also make one that doesn’t need Wi-Fi signal and can be used anywhere but I don’t have any experience with that model

Using bird netting to create a "chicken yard"

We used bird netting to create a barrier of sorts along the road. It is pretty flimsy so any motivated predator could tear right through it, especially raccoons. However, it keeps the chickens from the road hazards. Most of the girls know it’s there and just keep wandering along their...

6 week old Australorps, very different combs

That’s what I thought. Sally gets to hang out for now until she/he vocalizes which gender she identifies with. At least I can let my friend know he’s probably got a new arrival coming.

6 week old Australorps, very different combs

Hello. I know 6 wks is very young to start speculating but given the marked differences in these two “girls” combs, I’m questioning if we have one of each. I need to activate previously arranged Rooster Contingency Plan if necessary. Thank you all!
