Thanks for your replies! Ya that was the problem I ran into, was trying to find these products in Canada. Luckily we don't live far from the US border, and my dad is heading down that way in a couple of weeks. I will have the Elector shipped to a postal outlet there and he will pick it up for me.
They won't be allowed back in until it's dry etc. The One Shot was our only option short term, believe me, I made a lot of phone calls yesterday. Even the local vets didn't know. I've ordered Elector PSP which is Spinosad. Is there a brand of permetherin?
I should clarify, it was One Shot crawling insect killer (like Raid). It was still a little wet in the coop from the spray, and still smells, although we have a fan in there. Will the smell bother their respiratory systems? The other active ingredients are Naptha, pyrethrins, dimethyl ether...
So, we have mites, but that's not why I'm posting. We are in the process of cleaning out the coop (I've ordered Elector PSP but it will take almost 2 weeks to arrive), and can't let the hens in there right now but they are super panicked, banging against their coop door because they want to go...
This is one of the main reason we won't get a rooster. We have a border collie and she acts as their protector, so we don't think they would get along too well.
Haha yup. Ours hear the door open too and come running. I have to practically sneak out the door when I'm heading off to work otherwise they think I'm coming to give them something.
I read somewhere (on this site maybe?) that younger chickens are more fussy and won't necessarily eat the scraps, but as they get older they will eat them. I don't know for sure, though. We have young hens (about 6 months) and so far they only really like watermelon and corn (on the cob and in...
We think one of our hens laid three eggs yesterday. We aren't 100% sure, but here's the story...she laid an egg in the morning (we know this because we have 6 hens and had 6 eggs). Last night she was lethargic, didn't want to eat anything including scratch, and was extremely puffed up (super...
We've been discussing whether to leave their door open or not at night. Right now I get up around 5am and open their door. For the most part I don't mind as I have to be up for work during the week anyways. But I agree, getting up early on the weekend sucks! Their entire yard area is completely...
Yes, we got them at about 18 weeks (point of lay). I suspect they were from a commercial farm but I don't know for sure (we got them through a friend that was picking up about 6 dozen hens for themselves). She is healthy, laying nice eggs etc, so we'll just keep an eye to make sure she stays...
We got our girls as "point of lay" as this is our first foray into having chickens, but that's great advice for when we eventually start with chicks. :)
You'd get along with my hubby! We have 6 hens, he knows them all (we named them) by sight and by sound. He's joked about putting a GoPro in their coop facing the nesting boxes so we can see who lays what egg. At least I think he's joking...
We have a swing, but can't convince the hens to use it. We've tried enticing them with scratch, corn cobs, placing the hen on the swing. Nothing works so far. Hubby is sad, he really wants them to swing haha!
Sounds like you may have figured it out. We had the same issue, but we were told ahead of time that we would have to show our hens how to do certain things, like getting up to their roost. We physically placed them up there for a few nights until they figured it out. They came from a big farm...
