Cull him, or wait for protection?

Kill him and don’t hatch any chicks from his hens. Temperament is genetic and can be passed to offspring. There are way too many nice and respectful roosters out there to put up with an animal that try’s to attack you.

Trees next to run? I want to tell my husband he is wrong

I have 3 mulberry trees as well as a globe willow and grape vines and huge forsythia around my run. These trees and plants provide deep shade in the heat of summer. I’ve only ever seen a raptor perch on the top of the run gate. That was a huge owl and at night. Trees and shrubs provide cover for...

    Rubbery pus and swollen eye

Mine was declining rapidly. I put her down. 3 days of antibiotics and no improvement. I hate it when they don’t feel welll. She was a Dampierre.

    Rubbery pus and swollen eye

I’ve got a young pullet who presented a severely swollen eye. No other symptoms. I’ve been cleaning the eye with black tea and using the tea bag as a warm poultice for several minutes. I can’t figure out what could be causing it. We have tarantulas and I was thinking perhaps she went after one...

Incredible will to live- what now?

She’s doing better. We taped up her curled toes and she’s able to stand and walk, albeit not very well. She walked over to her waterer and got herself a drink without falling in. The force is strong with this one. One leg seems to be a bit splayed but I’ll deal with that once the toes straighten...

Incredible will to live- what now?

So this morning still can’t sit or stand. Heads still contorted and the chick can’t hold its head up. Toes are curled on both feet. This is why I don’t assist hatches. 🤦‍♀️

Incredible will to live- what now?

Please be kind. Normally I don’t assist hatching eggs and this last hatch was no exception. I shut off the incubator last night thinking I’d dump the duds and clean out my incubator this morning. My house is typically 72 degrees or less at night this time of year. A little while ago I started...

If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

I’m always a hope for the best/prepare for the worst kind of person. I have a small orchard and a grapevine and mulberry tree planted outside their run. Jerusalem Artichokes and comfrey. I’m planting field corn and sunflowers to dry and use as feed if for some reason their is a run on feed...

    Bathing/Dipping adult chickens

Is an outside temp of 80 degrees warm enough to bathe/dip adult chickens?

    Best and worst Roosters?

I had a hateful rooster when we first started keeping chickens. He would stalk you if you went outside and drew blood on both myself and my husband multiple times. It got to the point where we left a rake by the front door to protect ourselves when we went outside. Lol He was great at protecting...

Croad Langshans...anyone know where to find these on the west coast?

They were imported to the states in the 80’s. I have a flock of Croad Langshans. The eggs are a brown egg, not super dark and in the beginning of the season the eggs have a plum colored bloom which gives the eggs a lavender tint that comes off where t I found the page and messaged him. Thank you.
