Ok we had a pretty good fall-early winter egg laying, in coop but always in one nest* with 6 hens, so they had to take turns. Winter now here in Maine and we do let the chickens free range (little snow to date, hasn't been too cold). One hen has now decided to lay eggs in the horse barn up in...
Yup...stall rest for these hooligans..no free range until the eggs are showing up in the roost! Two eggs today...but one made her nest under the roost ramp outdoors..go figure!
Well we have had dogs and chickens for a while: the chickens do need a sanctuary in case the dogs forget that they aren’t supposed to chase them. I wouldn’t expect to put them together until the chickens are at least 4 months old. As the chickens get larger dogs will get reminded that chasing...
After a brief three year hiatus from hens and eggs, we picked up 6 assorted chicks and raised them; they are now in our renovated roost. One of the Buff Orpingtons has decided I am her man and repeatedly escapes the roost and comes in the garage looking for me. The other day she flew into the...
Okay the chickens have started in devouring some foam insulating panels...it doesn't appear to have done any harm...but shouldn't the foam source be removed? There are 9 chickens and they have eaten about 2 cupfuls over the last couple of weeks..
Does anyone know if this can hurt them?
Hi again. We put a couple of wood eggs in the nesting boxes to at least discourage the pecking...no broken eggs so far. Got two fresh eggs. Added more oyster shells to the crumble for food. Wait and see.
Standard Agway egglayer crumble. They go free range during the day. We also will put some oyster shell grind into their feed. I did have 3 nest boxes for the 8 chickens which I just doubled as there are usually one or two broody bantams tying up one nest. The broody part comes and goes. 3...
Hi,
We have the same problem! We have 4 RI Reds 1 year old, and 4 bantams all about 2-3 years old, varying types, no roosters. They live together and mostly lay eggs quite well, but recently we have seen one of the reds eating the egg right after laying it. Now she's doing this right in the...
