At what age do hens Stop laying?

Howdy All, I have an Ameraucana hen that is about 5.5-6 years old. A few weeks ago (6) she just stopped laying. Unusual as this is a cooler time of year when the hens typically lay very well. Thoughts? TWG

Automatic coop doors: I'd love your input

Here's a follow-up to my JVR Automatic Chicken Coop Door Opener: So far it's been great. No complaints. I can run it on 120VAC or on an installed Solar system. I would not hesitate to buy another one of these doors in the future. TWG

Will a Roo protect my hens from roaming dogs?

Last week while my 6 hens were free-ranging some neighbors dog got out (pure breed Pointer) and killed 2 hens, and severely wounded another. I got off a couple shots (pistol) at it but missed. Two days later the dog is back! I grabbed my pistol again and ran after it. Caught up with the...

    Devastated after dog attack

Same thing happened to me last week. While my 6 hens were free-ranging some neighbors dog got out (pure breed Pointer) and killed 2 hens, and severely wounded another. I got off a couple shots (pictol) at it but missed. Two days later the dog is back! I grabbed my pistol again and ran after...

    Any experience with Buff Orpingtons?

Believe me, they get treated like royalty. The very best feed, veggies and fruits, meal worms, and I do try to free range them every day. Next for me, and them, - an Automatic Coop door! This is going to be great. TWG

    Any experience with Buff Orpingtons?

Thanks all. Guess I'll pick one up. For the record, I'm into egg production. I told my(then) 13 year-old daughter, "Baby, these aren't pets. They're Production!" TWG

    Any experience with Buff Orpingtons?

Howdy All, My brother just got a handful of 6 month old Buffs and asked if I wanted one or two. Do I? I read that they tend to brood quite a bit. What about egg production? Thoughts? TWG

    Hen with swollen foot

I've used a very warm solution of Epsom Salts before on rodents and dogs for infectious punctures. Soak 2X daily for a full 5 minutes. If it's an infection (abscess) it will work itself to the surface and drain! Good luck. TWG

Getting prepared for a potential respiratory sickness: how?

This is why people here suggest direct dose of Antibiotics: meds in the water do not necessarily provide the correct dose, in the needed timeframe. TWG

Getting prepared for a potential respiratory sickness: how?

The only issue I see with that is I would only be able to dose 1X per day, which I think is insufficient for Tylan 50. Folks on this site recommended treating 2-3X per day. Thoughts? TWG

Getting prepared for a potential respiratory sickness: how?

Howdy All, In the past I have used Tylan 50 liquid given orally 2X per day for any respiratory issues. This worked well. When I did this my daughter helped me to hold the hens as I gave the meds to them orally. Now however, I don't have that help (by myself) so I'm asking the group for...

Automatic coop doors: I'd love your input

120 Volts AC, 60Hz, is standard power in the US. If I use a timer door I will not have to adjust the "close" settings weekly. Not sure where you get that from. Right now I have an alarm on my Cell Phone to remind me to "Close Chicken Coop" and I only adjust that once a month. So far, I...

Automatic coop doors: I'd love your input

Guys, it's time for me to get an automatic coop door. Any other input other than what's in this thread already? Also, I would prefer this door to be programmable with a clock rather than an optic sensor. Cloudy days could cause the door to close prematurely. Are there any WiFi compatible...

    Eggshells are thin. Why?

Howdy All, Within the last year my hens are laying eggs with much thinner shells than prior. The eggs used to be so hard I had to wack them to crack. Now some of them might break in my hand when carrying them. These hens are in the 2-3 year old range. They are getting a high quality egg...
