Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I too had a scare when my Silkies got into the duck pond in cold weather. I took the hen into the house and dried her off with a towel and then held her wrapped in a dry towel for a few hours. I did keep her in a warm outbuilding for the night before returning her to the flock though. This...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I have seen my Silkie rooster even pick up food and drop it in front of a hen. Roos are very good caregivers to their flock.

    Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

Do any of you have experience with keeping a Silkie rooster with full size hens like Red Rock? I have a mature experienced rooster that will be put with 3 Red Rock hens when the hens are about 4 months old or as big as the rooster. Right now the hens live in a run next to the roosters run. I...

Topic of the Week - Integrating Chicks into an Adult Flock

When should I put my Red Rock baby hens in with my adult Silkie rooster? Rooster is adult and experienced with flocks of Silkies. Hens are 8 weeks old now. They have been living side by side now for 4 weeks. Should I wait until the hens are of egg laying age before integrating them?

Young hen attacked and has scars on head

My young Old English Game bird hen was attacked when she was placed with a new flock. The top of her head was injured down to the scalp and now is healed but there is no skin on the top of her head so she won't grow feathers there again. I tried to return her to the flock with her parents and...

Comment by 'El Paso Linda' in article 'Reintegrating a Recovered Hen to a Small Flock:'

I have a female Old English Game Hen about 4 months old. She was injured by a OEG male in another flock that left her with a bald head. The skin was separated right down to the scull bone and now it is healed but will never grow feathers on her head again. I had tried to put her back in the run...

How do you help your flock with heat?

My Silkies have free range of my back yard. They go into the dirt area next to the fenced garden and dig a hole and nestle into it to keep cool. I also have a slow drip coming out of the outdoor faucet that they drink from. The drip also makes a small puddle and they lay on the cool ground in...

What did you do in the garden today?

I had to partially cover my garden plants so the plants can withstand the intense sun here in El Paso, TX. Plenty of water and artificial shade in hopes my tomatoes, cucumbers, greens, and zucchini will produce a crop. The temp here is over 100 degrees daily.

What's the temperature where you are???

I live in El Paso, TX and the weather is lovely at 60 degrees at night and 90 degrees during the day. I am enjoying it because it will soon be over 100 degrees during the day and barely down to 70 at night. All my bird runs are covered for shade and I have a pool for my ducks, although I see my...

    Who laid the egg?

I noticed that my silkie hens laid smaller than normal eggs at first. So the Maran probably will lay more normal eggs later.

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Chicken-Proof Your Garden?

I also built fences around my garden, raised flower beds and potted plants. I have to place the fence far enough outside the flower area so my ducks can't stretch their necks inside enough to reach the plants. My bantum silkies and Pekin ducks don't fly, so I don't have to cover the top.

Corinex quail hens with larger roos?

My quail and Bantum Silkies share a 8' x 16' foot dog run with dividers so they don't mingle. The quail seem to be oblivious to the chickens.

Corinex quail hens with larger roos?

My roo is an Old English Game bird. He is a fighter when near another roo, even one that is bigger than him, and he gives as good as he takes when fighting. I know he can't be around another roo. I am asking for my neighbor, he wants to mate the roo with his quail, I think I have discouraged him.

I am interested in starting to sell my eggs. I have chicken, duck and quail eggs. I want to know about setting up a business for this. I live in Texas. Did you have to get a permit to sell your eggs? Do you have to have inspections? Any advise you or others can give will be appreciated.

    ➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

I set 15 corinex quail eggs. 2 hatched. 8 eggs contained fully developed but dead chicks. 5 eggs were infertile. I used a n incubator with automatic turner. 12th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-Along

I set 8 Cornex quail today, April 3 2021. My incubator's humidity sensor is broken. I use a Govee temp and humidity sensor to show me the correct humidity. My last hatch was very poor with only 2 living out of 10 fully formed chicks. I hope to better control the humidity for this hatch.
