    Rooster down, can't stand up

I thought I would let you all know that while he appeared to be getting stronger we went out two mornings ago to find him unresponsive so we let him go over the rainbow bridge. Thanks to all who offered advice and suggestions!

    Rooster down, can't stand up

Oh yes, there was significant comb damage. He seems to be doing fine and we moved him into our old chicken tractor this morning. He is still fairly unsteady, but is managing to walk around. We're just waiting to see if he can get up through the small hole to the roost at night. If not, we may...

    Rooster down, can't stand up

We thought we had him secured in a section of our coop, but he got out and tangled with the young rooster. Back in the box he goes until we can retrofit our old a-frame coop for him tomorrow. We think he needs out of the box to be able to move more and regain his strength.

    Rooster down, can't stand up

He was standing some yesterday. Not super balanced but standing and getting around. We're going to put him out in the coop today and watch and see if he can get around and make sure the other rooster can't bother him. He needs more room than the crate. We're on the Puget Sound so it's not crazy...

    Rooster down, can't stand up

No outward injuries are visible. We have another rooster but they never fight, this guy is definitely top dog. No other animals have access or other way of injury that I could imagine. No parasites (thank heavens as he's in the house). I will check ears and crop today. Thanks to everyone for...

    Rooster down, can't stand up

He does not free range and their feed was definitely not moldy. Very Slight chance of mold on veggie scraps as my neighbor brings them over as well. No other chickens (16 total) have any symptoms. It really doesn't look like Marek's as there is no paralysis of legs or wings, they both seem fully...

    Rooster down, can't stand up

We feed a quality organic pelleted feed We feed a quality organic pelleted feed from Modesto Milling and veggie scraps. We have started vitamins today and are feeding them directly with a syringe to ensure he's getting them. He is eating and we think drinking on his own (spilling the dish so...

    Rooster down, can't stand up

I wouldn't say the symptoms match Marek's at all. He has movement in all body parts, can hold his head up, comb is upright and well colored, eyes look good.

    Rooster down, can't stand up

Yes we have and he can move his legs than, but can't support or balance his body. As to pain, I'm not sure how to tell. When left alone, he isn't breathing heavily or looking stressed.

    Rooster down, can't stand up

We have a 4 year old rooster that we found laying in the coop yesterday. He can’t stand but will try to push with his hind legs at times causing himself to somersault and roll around. If the body is supported he can push with his legs and flap wings. No apparent injuries. He seems to be eating...

Mama was killing chicks as they hatched

It went well. The last 3 eggs don't show any signs of hatching. No pips or peeps. We only have 1 rooster for 20 hens so it is possible they weren't even fertile or of course some other issue could be present too. The one that was seemingly stuck in progress with a hole for many hours hatched a...

Mama was killing chicks as they hatched

Thanks for the brooder idea. It went well last night, other than I didn't sleep well enough for checking on them.

Mama was killing chicks as they hatched

OK, I've tried that. Managing temperature with a heat lamp has been tricky. I'm going to aim between 97 and 103 and hope that's close enough. The one with the hole does actually seem to be more active already. Thanks for the idea! Time to go to bed for a couple hours.

Mama was killing chicks as they hatched

Mama was killing chicks as they hatched 3 of 11, so we took the remaining eggs out and put them in the bathtub under a heat lamp with a thermometer. One of the eggs we think the mama had punched a hole in so we helped it out (before reading a great thread here on how to do it properly). Another...

Comment by 'sschroeter' in article 'How To Raise A Chicken As A Family Pet'

@OlyChickenGuy it sounds like you have experience taming roosters. Mine is 19 weeks old and started attacking me when I come in about 10 days ago. I was never harsh with him or pushy until he started attacking and while he wasn't handled a lot, my girls used to hold him once in a while. Is it...

Will hand raising a rooster like this guarantee a polite rooster or can those hormones kick in and still make him nasty?

    Breeding Welsummer Rooster

I ended up with a rooster in this spring's batch of new chicks. Does anyone know what color egg I'll get if I breed him to RIR or Ameracaunas?

What are the signs of oncoming heat stroke?

What are the signs of oncoming heat stroke? My girls were all panting like crazy and sitting in the bottom of the triangular type chicken tractor that you often see. I ran the sprinkler on half the yard that their chicken tractor is fenced into for a little bit. Once they came out and started...
