Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

We already have one drake who is clearly THE BOSS in our run, so I did my very best to vent sex them and re-home the obvious boys. I am pretty confident I identified the girls correctly, but if we end up with a little hidden penis, then we might just have to build a "man cave"/ time-out pen...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

The two little guys in the separate tub are the boys and they are going to a new loving home tomorrow. The three little girls will stay here with mom 🌈

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

The 5 babies that hatched are doing great! They are running around with their momma inside the small enclosure within our duck pen. I'm not quite ready to let them out into the run with the other hens and the drake, but they are all getting to know each other through the hardware cloth walls...

    PLEASE HELP!!

I have been posting to one of my previous threads without response. I am trying desperately to save two remaining late hatchers that my mother duck abandoned after her first 5 hatched. Honestly, I just want to know that I have someone to bounce things off of who understands a little about...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

The one with the lengthwise air cell doesn't look good. I candled them before setting up my makeshift "incubator", and that egg had what appeared to be loose liquid sloshing around in the air cell side. I popped a little hole to see inside, and it appears that the membrane has completely...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

Just went out and mom had officially completely given up on the last two eggs. They were super cold to the touch, but candling still showed movement :-( For now, I put them in a small cooler wrapped in some old pajamas. I put the previously mentioned really hot desk lamp sticking through the...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

Well, she has definitely given up on the last two eggs, so I am rushing to try to set up a makeshift incubator right now to give them a fighting chance! I saw one say to put them in a crock pot on low with the lid open. Would that be too hot? I know they need humidity also, and was thinking...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

Here's a few pics I took just after hatching began. I haven't uploaded the more recent ones. They're hard to distinguish in pictures cuz they're (almost) all black fuzzballs! You can clearly see the one that our Blue Swedish, WhatThe, snuck in to the nest!

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

It is possible that they were a little later to be added. It is also possible that they were snuck in by one of our other hens before we moved her nest to the private dwellings (she had originally nested right next to the communal food dish out in the run!). It seems this has certainly...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

Yay! We had 5 healthy, happy little ducklings hatch out yesterday morning (all 5 were fully out by 1pm or so). Last night I candled the last two eggs and they still have movement but no visible pips, internal nor external. One looks pretty normal, but the other has the air cell lengthwise...

    Rats

We have always had rats in our duck run, but they never seem to bother the ducks much. They eat spilled and leftover food, and occasionally we have to fish one out of the pond and they have never been too much of a bother. But now we have newly hatched ducklings. Are the rats a danger to...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

I'm happy to report that momma and eggs seem to have made it through the heat ok, and this morning I noticed at least two eggs with external pips! I could hear peep peep peeps inside them when I put them to my ears, so I'm excited! I left the rest of the eggs undisturbed, so I've only...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

I'll try the frozen jug, that's a great idea, thank you. The eggs won't overheat or anything, will they? I'm surprised she is still sitting all day, as it seems that in 110 degree heat, the eggs are incubated simply by being outside, LOL! This is Emerald's (and our) first hatch (she is just...

Nesting broody duck in EXTREME heat

I have a momma Cayuga who has been sitting her nest for at least 3 weeks, probably a little more. I'm guessing, based on egg candling, that she's within 5 or 6 days of hatching her 8 eggs. My concern is that she is nested in a big dog house in the sun, and it has been an average of 110 degrees...

White Crested with Growth on Head

So far LePouf is doing just fine. She seems to be the strongest of the group, actually. The feathers growing from her little growth are crazy though...not sure if I should trim them or something....but they don't seem to bother her, even though they obstruct her vision....

White Crested with Growth on Head

Feels mostly fatty. Not hard. It almost feels like a very large skin tag, like it's only connected by a very thin stalk and the rest of the growth is much wider/fatter than the area that is actually connected to her head. Not sure if that makes sense....

White Crested with Growth on Head

Poor little LePoof...as if she didn't look ridiculous enough with that lopsided poof and extra side feathers...now she needs a helmet:lau:lol:

White Crested with Growth on Head

Oh geez! How do I make a helmet for a duck? Lol.....do they sell such a thing somewhere?
