    Brown leghorn: sex?

This brown leghorn is about 6-7 weeks old, allegedly female, from a feed store. I have a strong suspicion she’s a he.

    Exciting morning

This was an exciting morning. I welcomed the sun with a look out the back window, expecting to see the chickens emerging. Instead there was a raccoon pacing the bottom level of the coop with the door still closed. Figured that's it, time to start a new flock. I went out and heard some chickens...

    Chick died, leaving friend alone

Haha yeah I meant that with emphasis on early. Crack of dawn was more appropriate.

    Chick died, leaving friend alone

I suppose it could've been an owl but I doubt it. It was pretty dark and they were huddled up in the corner of the fence, behind the possums' tree trunk. I shouldn't have let them out that early but honestly I was more concerned about the known threat of aggressive chickens. Coco's still hiding...

BYC is prodding me to do this...

My wife and I got our first batch of chicks about a year ago. We’ve had between 3 and 6 at a time. We currently have barred rock, buff orpington, ameraucana, and cuckoo maran. We live near the city and let them free range our fenced yard during the day, locking them in a 2-story 4x6 coop at...

    Chick died, leaving friend alone

I’ve read warnings about only integrating 2 or more, never a single, so I was nervous. Good news, we put her in the big girl coop and she’s perched next to our current brooder. And Rocky is content on her roost, no pecking. Fingers crossed. I do have a trap, will set that up tomorrow.

    Chick died, leaving friend alone

No secure run to speak of, just a 2 story coop with 4x6 “run” area below. We let them out during the day. Our yard is fenced in but obviously accessible by possum. We live in the city and the only other predator I’ve seen is a hawk. Coco’s about 10 weeks.

    Chick died, leaving friend alone

We have 4 grown hens and got 2 babies (Red and Coco) in June. We were in the process of integrating, letting them all free range together during the day and putting them in separate coops at night. Last night we finally put them all in the same coop. I opened the door bright and early so they’d...
