We just hatched out some chicks 2 days ago. We kept them in the incubator after they hatched as we have done several other times beforehand, as we waited for the rest of the chicks to hatch. Last night, there was a chick a day old that was totally fine and then when I woke up, I looked in the...
UPDATE:
I let the pullet hatch an egg under her and she brutally killed the baby. Even when I tried to remove it she went after it again. This is a sad night :(
She has been sitting for the full 21 days and her 3 eggs have begun hatching. She broke the one that was on its way to zipping. She heard the sounds and when I introduced her to them at night, I didn't show them to ger but snuck them under her. So what would be the big difference if it had...
I figured she probably was thinking to protect her eggs, but it seems so strange to me that she would do all this. It's sad and I don't really want to give her a chance to hatch them in fear that they'll be dead as soon as she sees it. Maybe next time she goes broody... :(
This is our first time hatching chicks. When our pullet went broody unexpectedly, we allowed her to sit on eggs. But we collected many eggs to incubate and let her sit on a few so that we could introduce them later for her to mother.
2 babies hatched in the incubator and we tried to introduce...
OHHHHHHH! They have a cushion comb! Perfect match! I have never seen a cushion comb before and that looks just right. Thank you so much! Explains her crazy feather-do too!
I have a pullet that I bought from a person on craigslist. They didn't have any knowledge on breeds, so I assume she is a Buff Orpington. Whats strange is her comb is completely smooth and flat. There's no ridge to it and she has a weird feather spot thats flipped up on the side of her head. I...
I hear bantams are notorious for being broody, so that doesn't surpise me. I was shocked as well that our pullet, laying less than 3 months, decided to sit on eggs. She is still sitting and 3 eggs have developed under her.
I did tonight and so far 2 of the eggs definitely have growth. The rest probably need a few more days to tell.
So what do you do it hens keep laying eggs where she is sitting and she continues to gather more and more underneath her?
My sweet brahma pullet who was brought up with us as a chick, still jumps up on my back. She is the first to come and investigate and is totally unafraid, but very docile. She is not mean to any birds, even new ones to the flock. The Brahma rooster we have is a big baby who will run and hide...
I don't mind roosters. We have decided to raise chickens for duel purpose. I am pretty sure she is a Partridge Rock. We got her from someone who didn't give us much info, so I searched to find the closest match and that fit.
After I read your comment, I saw her off the nest for the first time. She went right back to it, so she must have gotten a stretch, snack and poop haha. Thank you! I was worried most about her eating.
I have a pullet who has been laying a couple of months. She recently decided to stay on the eggs in the nesting box. The problem is, its cold outside averaging at 20 degrees, but has gone down in the single digits. The coop it warmer since its right against the house, and her nest is against the...
