Comment by 'RavalliSurfer' in article 'Chickens & Winter Egg Laying and Lighting'

I've got just a small squadron - Austrolorpes and Aracanas. I have a single light that comes on at 4AM and goes off at 8AM. The only light i use is in the small sleeping/laying coop. Sunset here happens around 3:30 PM or so, I'm at 46°12" N, so our days are seasonally very short right now and...

    Heated water in Winter

FINALLY got a decent picture for you.... I fill the dog dish with water and just set the water directly into it, letting it overflow as needed. The lower water warms up, heating the upper water. It doesn't take much heat to keep it thawed out. Hope that helps.

    Help pls. Duck hatching

I've had to pip a lot of ducks. First, they were incubated under a Silky, and chickens don't go swimming once in a while like a Momma duck, so that when she returns to sit on her clutch, the momma duck would hydrate them. For the record ... my Silkies just took it upon themselves to gather...

What Are You Listening To Right Now?

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers on PBS-Austin City Limits. This show is right after the ACL 30 Year Retrospect on Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's been a good TV night!

    Heated water in Winter

I have successfully used a dog water dish heater. I fill it with water, plug it in and then insert their inverted gallon bottle and dispenser into the dog water. The dog water volume will spill out up to the rim and the chicken waterer will stay warm enough sitting in it to keep from...

    Heating coop

I built a typical paint can type heater with a 60 Watt bulb, a timer and a dimmer to control the heat. In Montana the temps just this week went from 80°F and is supposed to hit 25°F tonight ... and this is during their molt! I know they like that can heater as they are sitting in a circle...

I was given the wrong bag of food w/ 20% protein. Will it hurt my chickens?

I start my chicks on 30-32% Game Bird Mix. I would never use 20% protein since I like my birds to form strong bones and feathers. I used to raise 35lb turkeys on the same feed...no splays, no broken bones, very healthy and 4 of them would bend my barnyard fence rail when they all sat on it...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

3 eggs/4 hens.. today. Yesterday, it was 4 eggs. I never really get less than 3.. and one day I was hours late taking the eggs and found 5. Some hen is feeling guilty I guess for missing a day. 2 Auracanas, 2 Austrolorpes. Just passed their first year this March 1st.

Please help with questions regarding lice & housing. I feel so awful.

Ya know... I'm not sure. I would however note that if one country bans something, it behooves me to take notice and always err on the side of moderation. I've used Sevin, and always had good results. I know sunshine and oxygen destroys the efficacy of the active ingredients.....in about 24...

Please help with questions regarding lice & housing. I feel so awful.

The IVERMECTIN warning... Ivermectin Drops are usually sold under the Small Animal Exemption Scheme for use in rabbits, Guinea Pigs and ornamental birds. Products licensed under the Small Animal Exemption Scheme are not licensed for use in food-producing animals such as chickens and it is for...

Please help with questions regarding lice & housing. I feel so awful.

I tried the pyrithione, but it failed over and over. Ultimately, I found a treatment that actually worked. I got powdered Sevin (carbaryl) in an old dock and as I grabbed my chickens by the feet, I powdered their vents, under each wing (arnmpits?) and let them go into their run. I took...

    Sneezing chicken

I've successfully used meds for aquarium fish on my chickens and it has always usually worked. Your hen might have a cold or pneumonia or a very contagious respiratory disease that can wipe out all your other birds. I'd say get her out of the general population and downwind from your coop or...

    OSB walls?

Perhaps a little clarification by me is in order. The coop is actually square and is above grade level by 4 feet. It has 4 legs that are California tri-cornered with 2x6 at a 90 degree angle to a 2x8 running lengthwise. 10 inch lag bolts and 3/8 inch carriage bolts affix each leg to the...

    OSB walls?

Until OSB gets wet, it's pretty good as a barrier but I also used some scrap construction materials to build my coop. First..... it's elevated 4' off the ground on 2x6 legs, triangulated and California cornered. The walls are triple thick with plastic shopping bags inside for insulation and a...

When Can I Start Putting Training Eggs in the Nest Boxes?

I think the most obvious purpose, beside showing a hen where to put her eggs, is to teach them that eggs are indestructible and to not even bother trying to explore or eat them. A few packs on a ceramic egg and nothing to show for it (but perhaps a bent beak or a headache), is a great...

    Lighting for henhouse at night??

The coop I built is a fortress and I believe it to be absolutely rodent-proof. Bears however, may be a problem, and we do have blacks and grizzlies in the area. I made the latches raccoon proof and I know that nothing short of a bear or Sasquatch can lift the roof either. The chickens are...

When Can I Start Putting Training Eggs in the Nest Boxes?

I put 4 of them in the "maternity ward" when they were first moved into the coop from the inside boxes in the house. I think that if they see them and peck them often enough and find they aren't food or breakable, it implants an image in their tiny brains that it is counterproductive to even...

    In Montana's Ravalli Valley......

Actually --> the winds here have never been very stiff - blustery, more or less. I don't think the coop can move very well by itself, and even though it has 'sled-like' runners on it, it takes my Quad in 4 LOW and decent throttle to move it when we do move it. I don't think we'll move it at...
