It’s time to shed our misconceptions about chicken intelligence
I'm a scientist studying animal cognition. There is a lot more going on in the mind of a chicken than most know...
I am aware that cockerels are a dime a dozen, but I wanted to make these boys available to anyone willing to rehome them. They were hatched out by a broody hen in our backyard, but the eggs came from a mixed flock of all pure breed hens and two roosters. There were two roosters in that flock...
the orp is older the 3 ee are just under a year and are sisters, the orp is the biggest and overall the boss of the flock, within the ee, shes not the boss and the other two are like two peas in pod so the one being aggro is like the odd one out but out of all three ee, she is often paired up...
Ok, so this is a bit odd and i just wanted to ask if anyone else has this happen? I have 3 EE and an Orp. When i go to pick up my (docile) Orp, the same EE always runs over like shes coming at me and on a couple of occasions she has jumped up and scratched my hand or arm. The Orp almost...
i have one that i have to do this or hold feet with because if her feet dangle for even a moment she flips out, she also like to squirm higher and higher up until she is nestled in my neck under my chin
if i am just moving them around i like to do the two hands all the way around torso and...
not really, because we have relentless hawks, i just let them play in the backyard when im back there, but we just had a hawk attack while my kids were in a treehouse, fortunately the one that got attacked escaped with a small gash and some lost feathers and she is healing up fine, but yeah the...
yeah she has more flying ability than i anticipated, i have seen here go up to a six foot chainlink fence, but that was like a 8 foot hop straight up she did there, i also have some pallets upright on fence stakes to separate mulch, they wobble a bit and she likes to jump back and forth between...
i am captioning this, "one of these things is not like the other"
brown eggs from 2nd year blue orp for comparison
so one out of three of the new EE pullets at least is laying a turquoise egg, im happy
south carolina lowcountry, its buggy, i have only ever seen red mites on them which i assume are just naturally around, and DE seems to work, i believe in cedar oil, which is supposedly pet safe, and also my personal go to for gnats
For treatment, i wouldnt hesitate to use permethrin. But for prevention i am sort of concerned about toxic chemicals which is why i recommended DE, which I have found to be successful as an initial treatment. Incidentally, I also use Texas Cedar Oil (Juniper) pretty liberally in my backyard...
Hi,
I bought three EE (sold as Ameraucana via craigslist) pullets when they were like 7 weeks old. I picked a dark one a light one and an inbetween one, but as they have feathered out, I'm wondering how this happened that their feathers are so diverse and what breeds may have contributed to...
dust your chickens with food grade diatomaceous earth, get it down to the skin, under wings, under legs, by vent, on back between wings, pretty much all over, they will be powdery for a day or so, but that stuff helps, also sprinkle throughout run, coop, nest boxes, and in any favorite dust...
