I have had chickens a very long time. Most of my 40 years. It's been a few years but I didnt have a rooster for my free range flock. Mine was killed. At the time only hens. One was attacked by my neighbors dog as a pullet. She was alive still but crippled up. She squatted down and hobbled around...

    My new LGD. :)

It's going to be a job starting from scratch on the dogs again but it makes free range chickens much easier. It helps to get and keep another dog to be trained by the last dog but I slipped up and only had one that a pack of coyotes got ahold of. I'm thinking about getting this ones brother as...

Young flock stopped going to coop?

No she isn't caring for the chicks. She was miserable yet doing it anyway. I took her back to my new flock where she came from. She is the main one whom hovers close to the babies in brooder outside. I'm convinced now that's what it is. Even my young rooster is acting like he wants to swell up...

Young flock stopped going to coop?

Its higher in coop. See now I thought that may be an issue before with roost too high. But never was a problem before. My old flock was using this same coop for years until I moved them to another one. Then the new flock came and took the hand me down coop

Young flock stopped going to coop?

No. My old flock is across the property. Acres away. The flocks tolerate each other but dont mingle.

Young flock stopped going to coop?

No. They are established there. They were roosting fine and returning every night on their own. Trouble started when I put new brood outside. May just be a coincidence though. Idk

Young flock stopped going to coop?

I've 2 flocks. One is ancient and isn't the problem. The other Is comprised of 6 month old hens and a 6 month old rooster. 8 strong. I have 2 big coops. One car garage sized. The older flock has the nicer one but both are more than adequate. I have my young 3 week olds in a brooder on carport...

never before broody hen whom just started laying may be adopting chicks!!

Thanks everyone. I am keeping her and the chicks inside the house for a couple more days together just to be sure. Next I'm not too sure but I'm not letting other chickens get to them at first without introductions. I have a couple good size cages I can move inside the main coop or I can put a...

never before broody hen whom just started laying may be adopting chicks!!

I brought her inside with the chicks. She was hating it at first like usual inside. But when I put her in cage with the chicks she instantly changed. I moved my brooder light way over to just cover a corner of cage. She sat and let the chicks crawl under. Shocked! I've only seen this happen...

never before broody hen whom just started laying may be adopting chicks!!

Had 11 baby chicks a few days ago. In incubator. I have this sexlink hen who is super friendly. Nicest hen I got. She's a middle of the pecking order hen. All of a sudden i got the idea to let her see the new chicks. She clicked and purred to them through the cage so i let her in. She wants to...
