Urgent help, may be dry membrane

I only have chickens but I would definitely help at this stage. Mum would normally help, but if they are in an incubator it's up to us to use intervention as needed. I have had chicks whose membrane was too tough for them to get out. Sometimes I needed to use small nail scissors to cut the...

Help please!! Day 23 chicken eggs. Temp was to low

I am SO SORRY! Our incubator is set at 37.5 degrees celsius and we have very good results from that. I am not sure what the calculation is to turn this into Farenheit, but I do know that 100 farenheit is boiling point for water, so I think you may have cooked them! They should be at...

    Post-natal mania!

Hens beat human women by leagues when it comes to post-natal psychosis! (By the way, I am pleased to be able to say something nice about the human race in the current climate of race abuse where, by the age of 5, our small children know that the human race is horrid and destructive and...

    Mum has LOST it!

Once hatched, we normally move mum and chick(s) to the maternity unit where they are separate from the flock and she can concentrate on the chicks. This is a new mum and she has one live chick out of 9 eggs. She had two stillborn and the rest had not developed at all. We have moved her and...

If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

Hi, I don't know how it in the USA, but here our farmers are still working tirelessly and there is no shortage of grain. If you have room, plant plenty of sunflowers. Their seeds contain all the nutrition chicks need. My chucks love left-overs so I tend to cook a lot more rice than we need...

    What went wrong?

I think you may have overcooked the chicks. Normally, blood temperature is fine. That's about 37.5 celsius. Also depends what breeds you were incubating. Some breeds have a high rate of dying in the egg late on, e.g. Shetlands. Don't despair about the incubator. It works really well for me...

    My cockerel needs bromide!

Thanks. i found this extremely useful. I think he has to go. As you say, the older hens tell him where to put himself, but the younger ones just flatten, and he can cause damage because he is not very good at it!

    My cockerel needs bromide!

Cockerel born last year is rogering everything in sight, 5 times in half an hour. Hens are looking a bit beaten up. I mean, I watched a cock pheasant yesterday wooing his girl and he was SO gentle about it. Made a little dance and then jumped up with her on the fence, and then bowed and...

Just call me paranoid or impatient

I would make a small chip in the shell, and get through the membrane. Sometimes the membrane gets hard and the chick can't get out. If the shell is wiggling there's something alive in there. Mother chickens also help their chicks to get out, and you can see them pecking at the shell to help...

The attack of the squirrels HELP!

Yes, we have also had this problem. Our solution was we got these humane traps and baited them with some of the peanuts the chickens were being fed. When you have a squirrel in the trap you can put him in a sack and, if you are a squirrel lover, you can take him to a lovely place and let him out.

    Moulting and no eggs

Yea, I think you are so right about the protein. My avian vet says they need an average of 19% in the food when they are moulting. Left over mince is great, also sunflower seeds and chopped peanuts. Mine also love cooked fish, which is very high in protein.

    Moulting and no eggs

Hi, you're doing fine for them. I am sure your coop is brilliant. However, in my experience, and I also have buff orpingtons, they will not lay when it is too cold and when they have just been in moult. You need to give them a rest. If you want hens who will lay throughout the winter even...

    Respiratory disease

Hi, thanks for this. It's lovely to talk 'over the water'! Jesus Christ, the wet here! Four tons of bark chippings and they have all sunk into the 'bog'. Got a huge slab of stone now bedded in below the door to the chicken shed so they have some solid footing before they jump. Also put in a...

    Respiratory disease

Hi, Thanks for your posts on this. Yes, we have had more rain here this autumn than in recorded history, and one third of the national potato crop in the UK has been lost, including ours! The hen shed is on stilts, so no mould as it is well aereated. I have checked eyes and they are all clear...
