We have MaryAnne, Lovey, and Ginger. One of the girls crowed when they were young pullets. Ginger is a wild squawker and has the same toes and spurs as a rooster. She's little but keeps the others in line.
Put a louver over the ventilation inlet so air can still make its way in but the light shinning down can't.

Sands the best, but make sure it course washed sand because it drain well. Builders/multi-purpose sand doesn't drain as well. Buy it at a gravel pit, asphalt or concrete yard.
