    Dying of old age?

Thank you. We gave her a bath and closed the door to the house where the nest boxes are just at night. It’s been hot here, about to get 3 days over 100. All the girls slept on the roost bar with cross breezes inside the coop. She seems much better now, behaving like her old self. Phew. We are...

    Dying of old age?

We have an 8 yr. old white Brahma who is acting strangely, very lethargic. She stopped laying abruptly, and with our other 8 yr. old, that happened gradually. Meryl (Streep) wants to be on the nest box all the time. Since it is getting hot in OR ( so far high 70’s, heading to the 90’s) in order...

    Foot injury or disease?

Our Meryl, 7YO Brahma, is favoring her right foot. We gave her a 15min epsom salt soak (her feet, that is!), and took some pics. Any thoughts? The pad in the middle of the right foot seems larger than the left, but I don’t know if that is normal or not. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Barred rock with abnormal poo?

The continuing saga of Opal, our barred rock. I’ve checked her crop first thing in the am, and it was hard to find. Also, I think she may be eating less, though it is hard to say for sure as we have food out for them all the time. She is still very interested in treats, and is still acting...

    Barred rock with abnormal poo?

Yes on grit. Yeah, as I look closer it does look like straw. I’ll check her crop - what is your thinking? She doesn’t have access to straw at night.

    Barred rock with abnormal poo?

Thanks all for replys. I’ll try some high protein treats. Their normal feed is pellet chicken food, with some greens, apple cores, for treats. They have access to oyster shell. They don’t have access to grass in their run, but there is a straw bale.

    Barred rock with abnormal poo?

We have a 1 1/2 yo barred rock who is acting normally, but has developed what looks like abnormal poo, last 4-5 days or so. She is in the middle of her first molt, which looks like a pretty minor one. These poos have been consistent (at least for overnight). Any thoughts? Do I need to do...

    New member and poo question

Thanks for your reply - quite a Lucy coincidence - our Lucy is named for Lucille Ball. We are in Portland Oregon, and yeah not the best day to get responses, but chickens don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, so what can you do. Thanks for the tip on the ER section.

    New member and poo question

Hi - I’m Craig and my wife Anne and I have 4 hens: Lily an Americana, and Meryl a Brahma are 6 1/2 years old, and Lucy a Buff Orpington and Opal a Barred Rock are 1 1/2 years old. The older girls layed this summer (though Lily may be done now). We really enjoy their individual personalities -...
