Thanks so much for this. This hen was very aggressive and wouldn’t give up trying to push away the feed store chicks. I ended up taking them back inside and raising them there. Your method sounds like the right approach. I’ll give that a try next time. I really appreciate the thoughtful...
We let a broody hatch some chicks but we wanted to introduce a new breed of chicks, so we picked up a few day olds from a local source and tried sneakily adding them to the others when they hatched the next day.
The mother immediately recognized them as not hers and would peck them when they...
I’ve got a construction debris pile in my backyard that I know some of my hens have been laying inside occasionally. But I recently discovered that one of my Delawares went broody in it. It’s a very stable pile and probably one of the safest spots in my yard. The closest I can get is probably...
I appreciate the tip, but when I search with the terms I'd think to use, they don't turn up anything useful. Do you mind pointing me to one or more of these posts?
Sorry if this is a dumb question. Probably should've paid more attention in genetics in college.
If I cross a rooster of an extremely broody breed with a hen of a less broody breed, can I expect that next generation of hens will be somewhere in between the parents' breed on the broodiness...
In short, behavioral issues. Aggressive with other hens and very prone to laying eggs everywhere but the laying boxes and escaping high fencing. The rest of the flock used them consistently and tolerated ‘confinement’ on a 1 acre lot much better. These two multiplied my management time by 10x...
Thanks for the explanation. That’s roughly how I thought about it as well, but we planned to cull these two because of behavioral issues, not necessarily for the meat. We also want to expand our breeding program with desired breeds, and these were two of four that really don’t suit what we’re...
No water. That’s a good point. I didn’t consider that because they weren’t confined too long. They would’ve had access to it right up to when I caught them, but that doesn’t mean they had drank water recently enough.
No direct sun. The sun was already going down, but they were still shielded by full tree shade and a shed roof. I live in Phoenix AZ, so they are pretty used to the heat. I confined them in the coolest part of the yard where the flock frequently hangs out.
My wife and I have been building up the courage to start butchering our own chickens for meat. Today was the day we decided to make our first attempt. I went a couple hours before the time we’d planned to do it, and caught 2 of them and put them in some old nesting boxes to keep them calm and...
It's my first Arizona summer with chickens, and I recently learned that their coop is too hot for them to comfortably lay eggs in during the day. They laid in the nesting boxes I built them for about 9 months, and then one week, I started finding caches of eggs in random places across the 1.25...
I can't remember if I saw it somewhere else already, but an idea occurred to me and I've been googling around to see if it's something others have done successfully. Unfortunately I can't find anything.
The idea is to create a closed half tunnel using some wire fencing material or chicken wire...
