Not saying this is a case of drowning, as I’m no expert, but is the waterer too deep for them? I put some stones in my baby quails’ water dish to mitigate this risk. And like someone else mentioned, every time I get new members to my bird family, I always provide them with save-a-chick water to...
This won’t be answering your original question, but I wanted to add a tip that might help your girl recover.
What helped my rooster after he snapped even more of his beak off than that (still not sure how!), was to wet some feed until it’s like pudding. Have her eat that while she’s by herself...
An update for anyone reading this thread in the future, and further information on my ducks in case anyone reading is curious:
It turns out that ducklings can honk when they’re young and still turn out to be male. 3 out of 4 of my ducklings are male, as you all suspected (and were right about...
Hello group!
I just put my quail in their permanent coop outside today, and none of them are moving from where I set them. I’m worried they’ll be too petrified to move to their water (less than a foot away). How long until they’re used to the coop? Is it normal for them to be stay still when...
Great, I really didn’t want a rooster on my hands. Well, maybe I’ll get lucky with him!
Thank you everyone.
By the way, how did everyone come to the conclusion that it was a cockerel? I thought barred rock females were much darker than the males?
I’m thinking barred rock, but it was in the bin at TSC with the “Asian pullets”. The bars on her look more like spots than actual “bars”, but she looks so much different than my actual Asian pullet that I’m thinking I got a barred rock by mistake! Which is perfectly fine with me.
“She” Seems...
I’m not sure if I was mistaken to begin with, but I’m hoping I wasn’t.
When my ducklings were around 3 weeks old, I heard each of them give a distinct “honk” sound now and again. I heard that this was females beginning to quack, but so far it’s been 2 weeks and they’ve all stopped honking...
I was so excited that it was finally warm enough to let my babies get a bath outside and “forage” in the grass for the first time.
Unfortunately they don’t seem interested in foraging unless it’s grass clippings I throw in their tub..
Thank you so much. I’m trying to think that way; that any chick that dies is just setting future generations up for success because only the strong survived, but it still sucks! The others do look very healthy, and the Polish looks very robust today and is being a jerk like normal, so I have...
I went to check on my 1 week old chicks today, and one of the Polish was lying on its side, obviously dead.
I checked the brooder for bloody poop, and there wasn’t any. All of the others are eating, preening, and pecking around like normal. Two are even starting to fly! No signs of illness...
I’m very sorry for your loss, but I’m also grateful you shared that with us so someone else can learn from it (me, in particular). I had no idea that was a thing either.
I hope for the best for your flock in the future
