8-10 chicken coop size and layout?

I built a door that 5 feet long that opens from the roosting area. I laid down linoleum and pine shavings. I plan on opening door. Raking out litter with a hoe /shovel into a wheelbarrow. Then off to compost. No trays or anything. Seems easier than having to deal with trays. Also using deep...

    Chickens won't go in coop

Good news. They are all in there tonight. I tried putting them in there last night seemed indifferent. Went out there this evening they are all in. But they are just in the door not on any roosts. But I'll take it! I made some clicking noises and gave them some treats. Threw treats in the coop...

    Chickens won't go in coop

Just finished the coop. Chickens are 10 weeks old. They just sit on the ground in the run and under coop. I've sat them.in the coop several times but they just look around then walk right back out. Give it time or what do I need to do?

Does my coop need a pitched roof?

It's going under a covered back porch. With none sticking outside. So snow rain won't be a huge concern. Do I still need a pitched roof? If so can I just lay 2x4 flat, then one on its side then like 2x6 or 2x8 on side at the front top to give a few inches of pitch? The cover holes with wire...

    Nipples vs cups for watering

Plan on using 5 gal bucket and PVC or just bucket. Which is better horizontal nipples or cups? Both seem pretty hit or miss. Particular brand? Nipples seems like birds are thirsty and cups freeze and get stuck open. Or cups in summer and nipples in winter with an aquarium heater in bucket ?

    Silkie chicks dying

These were day old shipped Monday received Wednesday morning. Was immediately transported home and in brooder. Had a heat pack but it wasn't very hot. Like I said they aren't and didn't huddle under the light as if they were cold. The water was heated on day 1 and has been on the edge of the...

    Silkie chicks dying

I agree but that's the best I could get it to. They are also in a room in the house so there isn't any dips in temp. The birds are in and out of the heat area and the silkies are huddled under the light as if they are cold. The Easter eggers are thriving with no loses

    All flock?

yea thats what im thinking of either the naturewise starter/grower at 18% or the purina flock raiser at 20%. There is also a meat bird crumble at 22% that i thought about mixing half and half with the starter/grower (both naturewise). Or heck even the Dumor i just got for chicks is 20% as well...

    All flock?

So is the best way 20 % protein starter grower till they start to lay then switch to flock maintainer or 16% 20% protein with shells available? Is 16 enough?

    All flock?

Have silkie bantams and Easter eggers. Chicks currently. Was thinking of using an all flock 20% protein and having oyster shell available at all times. My concern is the first ingredient in the feed I thought about going with when they become old enough is processed grain by products. They will...
