I got a couple of fertile eggs with no information about breeds. It looks like one is either a black jersey giant or a black copper maran, but I can't find a good match for the chipmunk stripe one. I'm sure it's not an exotic breed.
Thanks in advance!
I’ve had really good luck with tomatoes as long as they get lots of water. Cucumbers get bitter, but do better with lots of water. Blackberries have gone crazy! 5 years after planting 2 vines, I have an area that’s 4’ x 30’ and last year made 5 pies, 3 quarts fresh berries in the freezer...
I put the Silkie in jail and after 2 days she wasn’t pacing in front of the closed coop anymore. Then the other one went broody, so now they’re both in jail (to keep the second one company-she gets loud!) Today she wasn’t as agitated, so maybe just one more night.
After the Silkies are done...
3 1/2 months old and is now as big as the other two. He's a lot fluffier, and has gotten new feathers in a new color, so now he's highlighted with rust. I'm dreading the day when he crows and I have to either rehome him or cull him...
Thank you! I do have a crate, so I'll put some hardware cloth on the bottom and try it out. I would look into getting some hatching eggs, but my boss doesn't want me to keep adding more (I already went from 2 to 4).
Now another broody question--two days ago one of my Silkies that I have at home...
I have a broody hen that has been sitting for over a month. It is a school pet that I am taking care of, and I can only go every 2-3 days, so I take eggs and clean but the other hens keep laying for her to sit on! There are 4 hens all together, and this one is the only broody one, and she'll sit...
I candled my silkie eggs every day until pip day. I also had a DIY incubator. I didn’t have a good survival rate, but I don’t think it had to do with not having a true lockdown. Out of 5 eggs, one wasn’t fertilized, one was a 3-day quitter, one stopped moving day 25, one died 30 minutes after...
My 5 month old Silkies just laid their first eggs! I read that Silkies are slower to start and could take up to 8 months, so I was not prepared. They’ve been on medicated chick feed, and I just got layer feed for them and non medicated chick feed for my 3 month old.
How long does the medicated...
Okay, it turns out all I had to do to get Nutmeg to go in the coop at night was to post about it-today the big girls went in at 7:00, and Nutmeg decided to go in at 7:45! Now I don’t have to wake up early to bring her outside!
On a side note, she’s seeming more like a he. Whenever she’s...
Since my chick was for a classroom, I wasn’t as concerned about heat. During the day it was in a box with a screen window and the heating pad was underneath. I kept the wool hen in the box, too, although it never got used during the day. I took it home every night because, well, it was a cute...
I have to keep these chickens at my school, which is closed now. When it was open, they would free range for about an hour a day, now I go there every other day for a couple hours. There are always eggs in the nesting boxes, so she knows where to lay, and there’s no place in the run for her to...
I got this chicken as a chick along with a Maran from someone on Craigslist. I wanted an Olive Egger, but when I picked them up there must have been 50 chickens and chicks running around and the guy just grabbed a couple. He said this one might be an OE, but could be an Ameraucana that lays blue...
