I've just gone and taken some pictures of their food, since I was going to change it anyway. Perhaps you can see something I don't. I separated out some grains that seem to have a blackened outside, but I don't know enough about them to know is it's normal. In the morning I can get a complete...
We feed them game bird food specially for quail/pheasents/etc. It's a mixture of various seeds; kale, sunflower, grain, etc. All our birds get fed from the same sack, so I'd assume that if it was contaminated, every bird in the flock would be displaying symptoms.
Sorry to bump this, but I feel a need to update and perhaps get more opinions on this persistent odd illness.
The vet trip was inconclusive. Vet confirmed there is no symptoms related to a respiratory condition, nor have any developed since then. No further birds have displayed similar...
Going to take my birds into the vet soon. The good news is that all the ones who were ill now seem much better. The weather outside is very bad at present, so bringing them inside in a warm and isolated environment has really perked them up. I hear no real sounds of respiratory distress from any...
Hmm. Very interesting. I'll remove him from their proximity immediately then. I have a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow. I doubt it's Coryza, as our chickens are over twenty meters away and there's a solid wall separating them from the quail.
My question is; are there any tests that can...
Hi. Three months ago I hatched ten Bobwhite quail. They were in a batch of eggs being brooded by a hen who suddenly abandoned them, so I put them in an incubator afterwards. All seemed healthy except for one chick who was born last with badly splayed legs, who weakened and died within two weeks...
I've had a few guinea fowl eggs underneath a Silkie chicken for a few weeks now. It's approaching day 28-29 or so of them being brooded, and she's still sitting on them. However, she seems to nudge them to the edges of her feathers every so often, so they're not as hot as they could be. Normally...
If so, it would be the first in that hutch, ever, in over twenty straight years. I'm not entirely discounting the possibility, but I would only accept it after absolutely incontrovertible proof. It was something I thought of, but as I'm not an expert on guinea anatomy and they're naturally...
So I've been keeping guinea fowl for about three years now. Their run is just outside my window, and thirty minutes ago I heard a violent staccato thrashing sound from it. Ran out and opened the door to their hutch, and there's a dead hen there. Less than two years old, perfectly healthy and...
Hi, so something strange happened to my family a week ago. Some friends of ours randomly found a golden pheasant wandering out on the road they use for their daily commute. They initially shoo'd him off and went to work, but he was back on the road when they returned. Acted relatively tame, not...
I have a quail that has recently developed a case of bumblefoot. Following some guides I saw online, I gave it a bath in Epsom salts and removed the plug, then cleaned the interior extensively with antiseptic liquid and antibacterial soap. Since then the swelling has not decreased, but the...
Fortunately, I've discovered the issue. It's not actually an illness. It's dust from the wood shavings we were keeping them in. This has never been a problem before, but apparently this hen is an absolute inveterate floor-scratcher and kicked up so much of the stuff searching for food that the...
Hey guys. I have an issue. I have two guinea fowl chicks at the moment who've been incubated by a chicken. They hatched fine, and the first two days have been great. But just now I looked at them, and both have a yellow discharge around the eyes. They seem relatively okay otherwise, eating and...
I was thinking about it, but the trouble is my country is in Level 5 Lockdown at the moment. My vet is also not specialized with birds, and wasn't able to do anything the last time I brought a sick bird to her (admittedly that one was too far gone to do anything with).
I've given my girl some...
I give her calcium flakes every day. Actually since I posted this afternoon she's been extremely active and was buzzing around everywhere until she laid an egg. The shell was a tiny bit thinner than normal, but I'm guessing that's because she was off lay for ages and we just didn't give her as...
Hi. I've got a pet Bob White quail that I keep indoors, and recently she's been acting a bit strange. For the last month and a half, I've noticed that she often spends time in a somewhat fluffed-up stance with a down-pointed tail. Her feces can also be quite liquid and smelly, especially in the...
I would strongly advise taking her to the vet if at all possible. I think she has a decent chance to survive and recover, though. I once nursed a pigeon back to health after it had taken a shotgun blast to the chest and neck, completely ripping open its crop. It made a total recovery within a...
If you have less than 4 females to one Bobwhite male, they might fight. If you have only two per male, one female will kill the other. Ideally, they should be in separate mated pairs with their own runs. I've gotten away with three pairs in a 6x6 foot run before, but even then, there needs to be...
Yes, definitely mean another quail. She's a somewhat flighty bird, but completely hand-tame. In fact at the moment she gets very upset if I leave her alone and even flies after me in the house if I leave my door open.
