Who says cedar is bad for chickens???

Any thoughts on using Cedar chips as groundcover in a yard? We have a 50x50 foot yard (some trees and shrubs), but it is turning into sloppy mud (we live in Seattle...). I was thinking of putting down a yard or two of cedar chips to cover the dirt. I would think that this is ok, given the...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

We are usually getting 6 eggs a day out of 12 hens. One hen is molting (she looks awful, but the feather are growing in quickly); one more looks like she is starting to molt; and two of our hens are 2 1/2 years old so they don't lay quite as much as they used to. Our young ones (two red stars...

    Post-antiobiotics...how long before eat eggs?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the injury happened a month ago, so she is well out of quarantine and has healed well. I double-checked the paperwork from the vet, since she had told my husband ten weeks...the paperwork says 8 weeks. And yes, the vet knew she was a layer...she had just...

    Post-antiobiotics...how long before eat eggs?

One of our chickens tangled with one of our dogs, and ended up on antibiotics for 10 days. She was on trimethoprim-sulfa. Our vet said that we need to wait 8 weeks before consuming any of her eggs. Since we have 3 chickens that lay the same color and size eggs, we are tossing out 2-3 eggs a...

Thinking this is an EE roo

Oh, well, no green eggs out of this one. We figured with the crowing, but he hasn't done it often, and he hasn't been acting very rooster-like. (We ended up with three roosters last year, all of whom had separated from the pullets and were crowing regularly by this age. Our neighbors were not...

Thinking this is an EE roo

This is Eddie (Eddie Scissorbeak). Eddie is supposed to be a pullet, but has crowed a few times. I wanted to check and see if he is definitely a roo. He is 16 weeks old. He is quite friendly so far. Any help is appreciated...thanks! Katy

Hen attacked 8 week old chick

Last night, my husband found one of our 8 week old chicks all bloody and lying still in the enclosed run. He thought she was dead...she perked up enough to be taken to the vet. Unfortunately, her injuries were so bad (most of her skull was showing) the vet said euthanasia was the best choice...

    brown eggs

I think older eggs work better for hard-boiling, it is easier to get the shell off. We've discovered that with our nice fresh eggs from our chickens, it is very difficult to get the shell off if we hard-boil them. When they are stored in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks, it is usually...

    ***Chickensitting Thread!!!***

Fantastic idea! I am in Washington state, in Kenmore (north Seattle/eastside). And we need a chicken sitter at the beginning of October, so finding this thread is very timely! I am willing to sit on chickens...ahem, I mean, do some chickensitting, as well. Katy

What is the longest you've had to wait for a hen to lay?

32 weeks. Really. Our chicks from last spring started laying in November and December. Go figure. Katy

    Injured hen!

Sorry, I wasn't clear, this hen and the other three adult hens have been together for 16 months and have never had a problem. And the younger pullets/hens (at what age do they officially become hens?) don't challenge the older ones at all. Sigh. This chicken thing is waaaay more complicated...

    JERK or Normal ROOSTER Behavior??

Two of our young roosters are doing that (20 weeks old). They keep trying to pounce on the girls from behind without any warning, instead of trying, y'know, to romance them a bit. We have to find homes for them anyway, but this behavior is making us want to get rid of them ASAP. I suspect one...

    Injured hen!

It could be a hen, but they've never had issues in the past. The boys are young (2 are 20 weeks and one is 15 weeks) and pushy, and none of hens are accommodating them at all. One of the roosters is getting more aggressive by the day. It just sucks. Fortunately, she isn't too badly hurt...
