    Summer vacations

Hey all. We live in eastern pa and have 8 Hens with a coop and attached run. We built the run to be "predator proof" because we are surrounded by a state park. We have 1/4 inch hardware cloth from top to bottom and for the soffits. On the ground surrounding the coop we have 2x4...

Can i move my chicks outside?

Hi all! My coop is done being built and I'd like to move my chicks outside. They're now 6 weeks old and I feel like they'd enjoy the space. I live in pa so it still gets a bit chilly at night so I was thinking about putting the light in the corner so they can stay warm if needed. I've...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

Insulation is a beautiful thing, way to go with the rafter vents as well. Check out building science if you ever have time to kill. Dr. Joe is a genius with home building. Glad you agree with the second layout I feel like my first design was too spread out and made things cramped. I was...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

I have no problem doing the combo for the coop. Tons of houses have both. mid century house were built with gable vents. when they get renovated the add vinyl vented soffits and ridge vents with new roofs... its a better flow pattern for roof sheathing. Not sure why they advise against it...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

Soffit and ridge vents would work together. That's an upstream vent. The gables is a cross vent. For a standard house it would be one or the other for an unconditioned attic space. I guess for a coop anything is fair game?

    Coop design (input appreciated)

I believe this is a much stronger interior layout for my coop. What do you guys think? Also. For ventilation. I was thinking either gable vents or a soffit and ridge vent system. Does either one sound better than the other? I'm still thinking of the poop board under the roosts I just...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

Ok. I'm going to do the apron that seems like win win. for the chicken and the wallet. Poop trays I can make any depth I want since I'm building from scratch. Is it still not worth doing? I was going to route 2x material and insert the plywood in the channel. And build it like a basic...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

I can easily be sold on the apron idea. Basically just lay the hardware cloth 2 feet around the whole perimeter? I will let them free range as well but I'm not going to rely on that. Poop trays aren't effective? Why do so many people do them and so many coops come with them? What is the...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

Sorry my drawings aren't overly clear. The roosts were planned to be 1 foot off of each side wall. The 2 foot sections are the slide out poop trays. 32 square foot not enough for 8 chicken? There is an additional space for the nesting boxes and an 80 square foot run. That was the sizing I...

    Coop design (input appreciated)

A little additional info. This coop is for 8 chicken and I plan on doing the sides of the run with Hardware cloth (1/2") and I was going to do the bottom as well. If I do the floor of the coop do I need to do the perimeter as well? Is there a downside to the chicks running around on hardware...

Most affordable way to house 8 chicken

Hey all, Sorry if I am over posting. My wife ordered 8 chicks last night we will be picking up mid April. I have some time to go before I need to finish my coop. I am a carpenter by trade and designed a great coop (in my opinion) but unfortunately by the time it is done it's going to...

    Hardware Cloth

Hi all, I have just got done designing (probably over-designing) my coop for my wife and I's soon to be flock. The biggest issue I am having is tracking down hardware cloth at a somewhat reasonable price. Our house backs up to a state park so I want to be sure the chicken will stay safe...
