Temps are pretty mild so far, hasn't been in the 90s most days yet. We had a very mild winter and so far this is a cool summer. We aren't 100% they are broody, no bald breast yet, and they don't sit all day. This morning one started clucking that sound they use to tell babies there is food here...
We have 12 adult hens, a bit over a year old, all of who were laying regularly 2 weeks ago.
1 has hatched out chicks, 2 maybe going broody, but that still leaves 9 who should be laying and for the past 2 weeks we've only gotten 3ish eggs a day. They all look and act healthy, we can find no...
so, bit of a complicated situation. We got our chicks in March 2020. We raised chickens when I was a kid, but that was 15-20 years ago, and they were game chickens, not anything we were super concerned about. So we just let nature do its thing.
Well we finally moved to someplace with land, and...
It's been a while, we're pretty nearly done. Theres a little bit we need to finish and a few bits I plan to gradually change, since I'm the one doing most of the care for them.
That is the roosts and that is not how we discussed building them. I actually requested removable roost bars and a poop board since I'm likely the one to do most of the mucking out. But dad found those posts in the old shed and decided to use them. And they are paying for it all so other than...
We have 12 2-3 week old chick in a brooder and are finishing up the coop. We've always preferred rhode island red, but this is our first time raising chickens in Louisiana and there were no rir at any of the feed stores. So we got Americana and cuckoo marans at the suggestion of the worker...
Coop is coming along. We were hoping to be done today but got rained out yesterday bringing and virtual church ran long, plus kids. Almost done. A bit more roofing needs done and some trim along the edges of the hardware cloth. Dad, the harry mountain man in the image, is trying to decide if he...
@ColoradoPip that is a plastic liner. We kept the tortoise in it for 2 years and his substrate needed to be moist so it's to waterproof it. The chicks have checked it out but arent too interested in it. There is a lid.
@rosemarythyme we live in southeast Louisiana and all the dirt around is...
So we converted the tortoise table into a brooder for our chicks. We had coco fiber in it, as that's what we used for the totoise. Hes been moved to his outside pen. We planned to use the kitty litter scoop to clean up the poop but chick poop is too small and falls through the scoop. Also the...
He is the sweetest, most fearful dog I've ever had. He's great with the kids, though the first time he saw a toddler he was terrified. He doesn't love strangers, human or dog, but warms up pretty quickly. He has some high anxiety, and its difficult to manage, but he is a great dog.
I'm looking to buy a few silkies. We only want 2 or 3, and places to order them from have limits, the lowest I've found is 5. We're in st charles parish louisisana, willing to travel about an hour or so.
Our hens are dual purpose, and I would like a few just for pets for thebkids and I.
Thanks
