Help! Is this Buff Orpington male or female?

It’s supposed to be. I got the eggs from a person who breeds standard buff orpingtons for show.

Help! Is this Buff Orpington male or female?

Very strange! I’ve never seen this happen. This bird is 17 weeks old. My males from this hatch look very much like males. This feather is bizarre!

Help! Is this Buff Orpington male or female?

I hatched a straight run and all of the cockerels had bright red combs and wattles and evidence of hackle feathers around 8 weeks old. I sold a few pullets and now I’m receiving photos of one of my pullets I sold that has a curly tail feather! All of the cockerels in this hatch have prominent...

    Breaking a bad roosting habit

Thank you for the help! Good idea on the angled board! Those windows are not covered. There’s one on all 4 sides of the hen house to provide ventilation/air circulation. The doors on the end of the hen house provide a 4’x4’ open air window. It is predator proofed with hardware cloth. The hens...

    Breaking a bad roosting habit

Thank you! I stayed out there with them tonight until it looked like they were going to jump up there. I herded them into the run and they went into the coop to roost. Im going to do as you suggested and start putting them in there earlier in the evening to make sure they don’t have a chance to...

    Breaking a bad roosting habit

It’s definitely hot right now, but I have ventilation on all 4 sides of the coop so there’s good airflow. Definitely could be a factor. I have 2 hens and 4 younger birds (about 8 weeks old).

    Breaking a bad roosting habit

My 6 month olds were doing great and roosting where they were supposed to. One evening the wind blew the coop door shut before they went to roost and when I got home to check on the gals, they were roosting outside of the chicken coop on top of their nesting boxes (photos attached). I thought it...

Yoohoo! I think my favorite pullet is a roo.

The Blue Australorps are 7 weeks. I’m fairly certain it’s a cockerel now. He’s started to get the attitude of one already. He’s tried to challenge the older hens a few times and runs his little flock of 4.

Yoohoo! I think my favorite pullet is a roo.

Thank you!! I'm hoping he's sweet. I'm going to try and keep him. Hopefully will be a good addition. May even try and hatch some Blue Australorps since he has 1 Blue and 2 Black hens to breed with. Hopefully I can somehow separate the Orpington eggs from the Australorps. Will need a lot more...

Yoohoo! I think my favorite pullet is a roo.

Thank you! And by "grow into a better rooster" you mean friendlier? Also, is there anything extra I should do to make sure the rooster doesn't get out of my yard? I've read they can be harder to contain.

Yoohoo! I think my favorite pullet is a roo.

I bought 2 blue australorp chicks from a pullet bin. Was taking photos of them today and realized one of them has a significantly larger comb and wattles are already coming in. I think it's a roo. I've never had a rooster before. Can yall confirm, and also provide any advice that might be...

Small flock has runny stool, one bird died already

Thank you for the information! This is super helpful. Regarding the heat: We've had unusually cold weather for spring (temps in the 50s at night, and 70s during the day). It couldn't possibly be heat related at this point, but I had considered the challenge of raising these cold hardy birds in...

Small flock has runny stool, one bird died already

Thank you. Just over here wondering what I did wrong. I'm in Texas.

Small flock has runny stool, one bird died already

Thank you so much for the quick answer. Certainly makes sense being so close to laying, although none of them have laid an egg to my knowledge. Going to take your advice on administering Corid to the other 2. Should I also feed them a dewormer?

Small flock has runny stool, one bird died already

HELP! New chicken owner here. My first flock of Buff Orpington pullets is already in trouble after only 5 months. My head pullet started separating herself from the other birds. She wouldn't eat with them and started hiding. I noticed she had lost some weight, had runny stool and was quite pale...

    Re-training Chickens to Roost?

I have the same problem. My Buff Orpington pullets refuse to roost. They sleep on the floor of the coop cuddled together. When they are free ranging in the yard they love to take naps on my ladder and low hanging tree limbs... seems weird they won't roost at night on the provided 2x4. Curious if...

Saginaw TX doubling allowable numbers of hens!

Yes, my apologies for the confusion. Saginaw is just so close and I have lots of friends who live there, so I was excited to see someone advocating for them. Fort Worth is very chicken friendly. We're also allowed one rooster (although I do not intend on getting one).

Saginaw TX doubling allowable numbers of hens!

Amazing! Thank you so much for advocating for all of us in TX. I live in Fort Worth and have 3 chickens in my flock. Looking to expand to 6. This is exciting!
