Is this a developing chick or something else?

I cracked this egg open this evening that had been collected this morning. We collect eggs every day but normally earlier in the day. Today it was later in the evening when we collected. I just want to know if this was a developing baby or something else. Yes I have a rooster

Have a question about incubating eggs. Specifically washing them before incubation.

That’s perfect! I’ll give that a try. Thank you.

Have a question about incubating eggs. Specifically washing them before incubation.

Unfortunately, the mud I’m dealing with right now won’t come off with a simple wet towel. I can only get them clean by dipping them in & out of running warm water while wiping off the gunk. Is that to much?

Have a question about incubating eggs. Specifically washing them before incubation.

I’ve incubated several eggs successfully last year. I normally only use the eggs that are nice and clean already to incubate. However, this year I want to start back up but my run has become a total muddy mess that I’m trying to dry out. That may not happen for quite a while. The reason why is a...

Trying to figure out what potential egg coloring I could get from a particular pairing.

I have 2 amazing hens that have gone broody for me. I’m trying to figure out if I should let them hatch some of their own eggs or put my pure breeds under them. Moms are a cream legbar that have been laying sky blue eggs for me for the last year and a half. Dad would be a Swedish flower hen who...

Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

She’s being a great momma. I love it when my girls hatch out their own babies. It’s so much fun. I’m just keeping a close eye on her to make sure she keeps the babies warm enough. So far she’s doing great. One of my buff orphingtons loves babies. She never wants to hatch the eggs herself but is...

Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

She marched right into the coop with them like she owned the place. Beat the shit out of 6 other hens who dared to come over to investigate the chicks. Led them over to the rooster to show them off & he responded by crowing his head off! He’s been super puffed up ever since. A great dad. Will...

Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

She successfully hatched 4! She’s being a great momma. Very aware of where her babies are & super protective! Only one who can get close to her babies is my rooster.

Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

I candles the eggs again and only 8 seem to be developing now. That’s a more reasonable number I think. We are going to let her try. If she’s successful then good for her. If not then maybe next spring she can try again. She’s a sweetheart & her momma is my best hen. Pure red speckled Sussex...

Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

I’ve got a Swedish flower hen that recently snuck off & disappeared. We looked everywhere for her for 3 days with no luck. Then suddenly she showed back up at feeding time! We just thought she had been hiding from all the cold weather & snow. Then she disappeared again for a further 4 days...

My son’s chicken was a surprise.

A fun story. So this summer one of my hens snuck off to go brood a clutch of eggs. We found her on her stash of 12 eggs a week later. I decided to candle the eggs to see if any were developing. 8 were. As a family we decided to let her continue to try to hatch her babies. 14 days later & only 5...

    Rooster questions. Need advice

So I ended up with a total of 5 roosters from all my hatchlings. My 2 older ones were great until they totally turned. My dominant one still respected me & was great but he got into a huge fight with his son & ended up dying. His son was ok for a little while but then started attacking anything...

Official BYC Poll: How do you name your pet chickens?

We named our chickens based on a type of system. My salmon faverolle’s are named after salmon breeds. My Swedish flower hens are named after flowers. My red speckled Sussex are named Nessie, Swiss Miss, & Cocoa since they reminded us of hot chocolate with marshmallows. We have themes for our...
