    Missing hen!

Happy to say she was standing in the garden this morning waiting on the others to join her 😁. She seems fine and going about her business, always been flighty and not up to person contact anyway so nothing new there. Been reading online today there have been cases of avian flu in the UK so...

    Missing hen!

We're down to about 8 or 9 hours of light here on a good day so more than likely the cause.

    Missing hen!

If she doesn't appear then I have all day tomorrow to look for her. Our egg count has dropped significantly of late and I wondered if some may have found a new nest, may just be the late nights and wintery weather coming in where I live though.

    Missing hen!

Yip, entirely my fault, the bungee cord keeping the run door open snapped and the door closed in the wind. I've kept the run door open just in case she finds her way back.

    Missing hen!

Hopefully she shows up when the others get out into the garden tomorrow. We're pretty much surrounded by houses here and luckily enough I went out before it was dark enough for foxes to be out looking for a free meal. I just hope the other girls aren't too distressed with tonight's events 😣

    Missing hen!

So tonight when going to lock up I seen that the run gate had closed and the girls were left in the garden. Most had perched on the outside of their egg box, one was hiding behind the coop and one had hid in a corner behind some old garden pots but I'm one girl down. No sign of predator foul...

    Possible injury

No we don't have a rooster. She stands, walks and semi runs like that too. She seems a little better now she has laid an egg today but still not 100%

    Possible injury

Hi. Yesterday I noticed that one of our young chickens around 26weeks standing with a strange posture. Her bum and tail almost always faces the ground, even when eating with her head down, which usually pushes their bum up. I say this is strange as she is a leghorn hybrid and her tail was...

    Poop colour. Cecal poop?

Is there anything I should be doing to help or is this something the bird will get over herself?

    Poop colour. Cecal poop?

Hi all. New chicken owner so not very knowledgeable on chicken poop or illness. This morning when letting the birds out I noticed one had done a very sticky, runny and mustard colour poo. I stuck around and seen which pullet it was and it done it again. It was very stinky and mustard in...

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

I'll segregate a part under it today. After the initial excitement of breakfast the bullying has died off a lot and it's just general pecking which all the birds are doing to each other when they get in each others way. Definitely a space issue I feel. We live and learn. When I was building it...

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

I'll get right onto the extra feeding stations now! Can't believe how quickly they break your heart seeing them being picked on. Thanks for the compliment. I'm going to divide a section off under the coop so they can retreat during the day. I can't section it all off as the Partridge Leghorn...

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

I now plan to extend the run by at least another 2.5meters. Including unter the coop it's nearly 4 meters x 1.8meters right now. I should have taken more time to build it bigger initially but the wife and kids were desperate for chickens and I thought the current size was ample but looking at it...

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

I don't have a segregated area as I wasn't expecting to have this issue of buying birds at separate times. I could knock up a small hutch from the left over wood. Will segregation not just delay the bullying?

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

as you can see its still a little unfinished. I'm building a roof over the run and will be extending the run to incorporate the acer tree. Juat hard to get wood right now as Scotland is still under tight lockdown restrictions with covid-19.I will extend the water feeder right under the coop to...

We finally got our first chickens. Pecking order

So after a couple of years of consideration we finally decided to go for it. Built our coop ourselves and bought 5 POL's (mix or breeds). Due to it being fairly late at night I just put them in the coop for the night with food and water. The next morning they got into the run to explore. They...

    Hopeful new chicken owner

Thanks to everyone who has posted help in here. Coop build is well underway and almost finished and lined up to pick up our chickens on Wednesday! I'm putting equinola horse bedding down on the coop floor. Was wondering if poop boards would be a good idea or go with the deep litter method as...

    Chicken run and acer tree

Thanks. My intention was to always remove or damage the liner so that holding water wasn't possible. Filling it with gravel, weed barrier and then 10 inches or so of sand for the birds to use as they wish. Just wondering if it was a good idea or if they would use it. Obviously all precautions...

    Chicken run and acer tree

That was my first intention to build the coop on stilts over the pond and back fill with soil, a weed barrier then 10 inches or so of sand. Then I though have the coop opposite side from pond and let them have a dust bath area and a semi natural foraging area around the tree within the coop...

    Chicken run and acer tree

Thank you all for replying. I intend to have a coop of about 6ftx6ft(2mx2m max!) with a run of about 4.8m long if I included the tree in the run but 4m if I stop it at the tree and still inlude the old pond. I want to have the coop up on stilts so I can maximise the floor space. The pond was...
