For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

Hi @paintedChix ! I cannot remember if I replied to your post (my mind is off in another world these days!) but I wanted to thank you for writing up your perspective. Much appreciated! In the end we went with the wood chips and we are pleased with that choice. It is challenging, because you...

Thanks for posting your experience, @Chullicken ! (Sorry it took me so long to reply... it's been a busy work week!) I find it helpful to read different perspectives to learn! :)

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

Hi Mary @Folly's place , Windows or vents on all sides, large one on the side you can't see. Keep in mind that image was at the beginning of the build but showed the footprint of the run the best. All windows reinforced with hardcloth wire and and latches for raccoon thwarting (and some...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

Thanks, @aart for your advice! I appreciate it. :-) So, we can store in a pile and add as we go (as long as my husband agrees). Are you suggesting that we might want to consider starting by adding a small amount (instead of starting with maybe 3-4 inches deep)? And I'll have to look up the...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

We DO have a chipper and ran the corn (cobs and dried stalks) through the chipper to help break down for our compost pile. (Drat, we added the dried stalks to the compost pile just this spring.... wish we would have saved them!) Cold compost pile - got it! So I've got a new subject to study! :-D

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

No buildings or fences downwind (immediate neighbors also have spare amount of trees and the leaves = blown far away), but your idea about getting some leaves from friends/family is a good one. (I was overthinking the problem.) I'm sure they will be happy for me to rake their yard and take...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

Thanks for your advice, @rosemarythyme - very much appreciated! Yes, I am probably focusing on the bumblefoot / splinters issue too much. (Sometimes I do that... hear about one possible problem and then I'm off!) But thank you for weighing in on the chips in the picture. Very much appreciated...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

@3KillerBs - Thank you so much for such a thoughtful reply. I appreciate the feedback! Your advice reminds me of a Hobby Farms article I read about using wood chips, shavings, leaves, etc. Your observations are very much the same. I am definitely leaning towards what you have described - BUT I...

For the Run: Wood Chips or Sand, Back and Forth! Here's a photo - thoughts?

Hi all, I have read so many threads here on what to use in the chicken run. And, outside of BYC I have watched videos and read articles. But I am now at a point where I am stuck. I have read pros and cons to both. (My husband is losing his patience with me, I think!) And "experts" and...

    Insulating and heating coop

Hi @SophiaLinn - we are in Upstate NY and are in the process of building our coop. We made the decision to insulate the coop because of frigid wind. Our flat property (pretty much no trees) is situated such that we have pretty much a constant wind coming from the west - in Winter, it's...

    Predator Proofing

Hi @jbahros - are you new to BYC? (I am!) Welcome! :-) Thanks for asking the question re predator proofing. We have the same predators in our area, too. We also have skunks, which I guess can also be a hazard, especially if they can get to eggs. I will be curious to read the advice from the...

Hello! Been a "lurker" for years, finally brought home chicks and decided to join BYC!

Thanks for the welcome, @chrissynemetz ! :-) We are in the process of building the coop from scratch - it fact were working away today until the sudden snow and wind forced us inside! It's been quite the spring! But we are working away and hope to have the coop and run completed by Memorial...

Hello! Been a "lurker" for years, finally brought home chicks and decided to join BYC!

Hi @pozees2 ! Nice to "meet someone from the area" so to speak! I lived in Rochester from 2004 - 2016. It's really an easy city to live in. A lot of wonderful festivals and restaurants, too. :-) As I type this, it's May 9th. Being from this area you won't be TOO surprised to know that we're...
