    Do automatic coop doors freeze?

I'm going to pick up an automatic door, I haven't selected one yet. But I live in New England and I'm wondering if ice buildup on the door tracks is an issue for anyone. Thoughts on whether spraying it with something like wd-40 would help prevent that?

Two broody hens, one long hatch

I have two hens. White hen started brooding, was kicked off the nest by Grey hen, so she set up another nest. There's about 20 eggs under Grey, 4 hatched about 3 days ago, another hatched today and was booted out of the nest (or let to tumble away from it, either way Grey didn't care for it.)...

Do I do anything about this string/yolk situation?

S/he is perfectly fine so far, just sleepy in the picture. We did a warm water soak to keep the membrane pliable, it's had some water with nutridrench. Napping now. Do I do anything about this? I would like to trim that membrane, will the rest resolve or is this going to go badly? It does have a...

Can I put a wet hen outside in summer?

My brahma had a very messy back end today and I gave her a bath. I need to keep her contained so I can make sure it wasn’t from a stuck egg, so I was just going to put her in a large cage outside in the shade with food and water. It’s 80 degrees out. Think it’s ok to just put her out damp?

    Pekin with bumblefoot

Here is one of her feet, I couldn’t get her to calm down for the other one. They each have a big scab in the same place. But, neither feel warm or firm around the scab, and I don’t think there’s any swelling. She’s been on antibiotics for 24 hours. And now that she’s had a bath the disgusting...

    Pekin with bumblefoot

I don’t have pictures yet, I need an extra pair of hands for pictures and wrapping her feet. B She’s in my bathtub, should I put down anything soft in there for her? I was thinking towels but they’ll get so wet with poop that I don’t know if that’s any good. Thoughts on creative ways to soak...

    Pekin with bumblefoot

I was given a Pekin girl today with scabs all over the bottoms of her feet. A friend rescued ducks from an neglectful situation, and now she’s here. The scabs don’t seem very swollen, but they do smell awful. I have amoxicillin on hand (from our vet, it was for another pekin who didn’t need...

    Chicken Coop and Lime

My chickens live in a big barn stall. I’ve done the deep litter method since the beginning of autumn. Last year deep litter worked out great, but this year I must’ve done something wrong, because underneath the first few inches, there’s a very strong ammonia smell. My local ag store told me to...

    I won the rooster lottery

So far, all the babies born here were fathered by my one Roo who is an Easter egger and all his babies are so pretty. Here he is, and the big black and green is his son! (Mother was a white Brahma, he’s bigger than both of them!)

    I won the rooster lottery

I wish I could, but she's no longer with us :( She was killed defending one of her babies from the older hens. I miss her so much.

    I won the rooster lottery

Last spring I bought 4 "sexed" day old chicks that turned out to ALL be roos. A hen hatched out two more babies, got two more roos. Finding homes for them took well into the summer and meant hours and hours of driving all over the place to their new homes. BUT. NOW. One of my hens hatched a...

    Injured Pullet

Wanted to update on how this pullet is doing. An eye injury became visible, with terrible swelling in the upper lid. I started with ophthalmic eye drops until I could find some Vetericyn eye gel, which I'm using 2x a day. I can occasionally see the bottom half of her eye, and it seems fine...

    Injured Pullet

That is so good to know, thank you so much. I’ll keep it up and see how it goes.

    Injured Pullet

Great info, and great questions. I have been treating her as if she is still in shock, I’m actually hoping that’s all it is and that she’s not in physical pain. There were no feathers lying around the body, I suppose it could have been a hawk? I do think the hens are more likely but I won’t rule...

    Injured Pullet

A 3 month old pullet was attacked by older hens on 12/31. I wasn’t there to see it, but I’ve seen older hens drive her away from the food in the past, and her mama bird was found dead in the yard. I’m fairly certain the other hens are responsible. No animal tracks in the snow, no one missing...

    Mother Hen leaving baby chicks

My youngest hen hatched a dozen chicks in the middle of October. We are in southern Maine and the weather has been pretty chilly the whole time. Until recently, mother hen has been great about taking care of all of the babies. Very attentive. At night, they roost in a pet carrier, to help trap...

Mama Hen hatched THIRTEEN babies yesterday.

Thank you! Their papa is so pretty, this is a pic of him and the black/green boy is his baby. He was born fully black and now is gorgeous- there’s even purple on its back. I can’t wait to see how these babies turn out.

Mama Hen hatched THIRTEEN babies yesterday.

That was my hunch. Mama bird has been trying to get them out of the brooder. Since they aren’t ready for the big barn, I moved them into a large pet carrier in the garden. They spent half the day closed in, then I let them out to roam. I’m hoping they’ll nest back in the carrier instead of...

Mama Hen hatched THIRTEEN babies yesterday.

If you move a mama chicken her babies to a new nesting spot, does she take to it quicker than a full size hen being moved to a new coop?
