Review by 'Henloving' in article 'Humane Euthanasia: When, Why, and How'

The Vet will put your hen down! This is the quickest, most humane way. Why traumatize your hen if and when these methods aren’t executed with precision?By the time you’ve located and figured out the dry ice technique you might have well had simply made an appointment with your nearest livestock vet.

Mama Hen Newbie in Northern California

Hi there! I thought I’d introduce myself. I live in Sebastopol (and love Penngrove!). My name’s Catherine and I’m sitting here with my 14 hens while I write this. I had 4 hens for quite some time, and this spring decided to “go big” and well, it’s a story how I got 10 more chicks but I’m...

Old hen with bilateral leg weakness, otherwise healthy

OMG. I have the same issue happening with an 8 year old hen. It began gradually and 6 months later hasn’t gotten better, and if anything, a bit worse. I feed her just the same as you do your hens. My other ones are fine. Have you found out anything at all you could share with me? Thanks...

What do your chicks like to eat as a treat?

Mealworms for sure, oats, finely chopped lettuce, apple, and blueberries. Hmmm. Same as me, come to think. Except for the mealworms! ;)

    Help! Maggots at vent area.

My goodness. I am so sorry I forgot to respond! And everyone has been so kind and informative. Please forgive me. I am happy to say Astrid is doing fine. She wasn't however for quite some time. I moved her inside as recommended by someone on this thread. No maggots returned. I treated the...

Lost one of my girls with very little warning

So sorry about Ruby. They are good at hiding illness. It sounds that you did the best for her. I’s not at all silly to be in deep pain and grief when they get ill and die!! You’re sadness is in proportion to how much ypu loved her, which, lucky Ruby, was quite a bit. My heart goes out to you.

    Indoor temp for ailing hen?

My six year old Australorp got flystrike, maggots included. This is day two of treatment. I already posted about it, and folks gave me SO much help. Today, I treated her with baths, trimmed feathers around the necrosis beneath her vent (the site of the the flystrike). She ate yogurt, drank...

    Help! Maggots at vent area.

Also, she pooped a bit of greenish diarrhea (likey from eating backyard greens) and I examined it carefully for any maggots and none came out of her. The two I found were in a crease of her wound/ dead skin area.

    Help! Maggots at vent area.

So good to know. I will get some tomorrow when the feed store opens. I have a pic to post. I feel horrible that i had NO idea what was happening below her vent. In the meantime, I gave her a second bath, got two maggots, blew dried her & applied triple antibiotic ointment.

    Help! Maggots at vent area.

This morning, my 6yr old Austrolope hen didn’t come out of her hen house with the other four girls. I will try my best to be succinct in what I did already and some recent history. I would deeply appreciate advice! What follows is lengthy but I want you to have as much info as possible. Thanks...
